Preview: National Cyclo-Cross Trophy

Round 5 of the National Trophy travels to Peel Park in Bradford on Sunday

Bradford is the venue for the final major National Trophy Cyclo-Cross event before the British Championships (Ipswich) in January and on an interesting course, especially if it’s wet, it will not only play into the hands of the technically adept ‘cross riders but also the many spectators who are sure to be watching.

Previous Rounds: Round 1 Feature | Round 2 Feature | Round 3 Feature | Round 4 Feature |

National Series Tables after Round 4

Veterans (first event of the day, 10.30am)
Two races in one with the first group away the over 40’s where the riders expected to lead the way in this event being Darren Atkins and Jim Bryan. A short while later (a few minutes), it’s the Over 50’s turn to thunder down the starting funnel and if Mick Bell can avoid any mechanicals, he and British Champion Steven Davies are sure to be heading the field away from the start. Mick Bell last week lapped his nearest rival in his category at the Regionals!

JUNIOR MEN

Like a lot of British Cycling’s national series, there are some riders who tend to sit back and then come into the series late to get form for the British Championships and this category is no exception. British Champion Hugo Robinson, who is back in 5th in the series,  is in cracking form but he’ll have to contend with ‘local’ Joe Moses who leads the series. Then there’s Alex Welburn, Adam Martin and Tom Armstrong. It’s a very competitive category and a cracking race is a cert. Probably the best and most exciting of all the categories this one!

WOMEN
This race looks like being a blinder as well with only four points between Adela Carter and Hannah Payton. The latter beat Junior World Road Race Champion (Women) Lucy Garner in Shrewsbury last weekend and so Adela will be facing a real battle to hold onto the series leader’s jersey.

Then throw into the mix the Silver medallist from the Cyclo-Cross worlds a few years ago, Louise Robinson and her teammate Isle Rowntree, plus one of the top mountain bike riders in the world, Annie Last and a great race is on the cards.  Bethany Crumpton too has been itching to get back on her bike after injury and it’s hard to say which will be the better spectacle, the Junior Men’s race or the Women’s – probably both in equal measure!

YOUTH
The Under 16 Boys and Girls race will, like most of the races on the day be battles between three or four riders although in the Under 16 Boy’s there could be as many as half a dozen vying for the lead. Jack Ravenscroft won solo in Derby while Jessica Wilkinson and Grace Garner are having quite some tussle to lead the series. In the Under 14’s Daniel Tullett and Charlotte Broughton are both dominating their races and they should again cross the line first for their respective races.

Left: Jack Ravenscroft shows how delighted he is winning a round of the National Trophy and now leads the series. Right: Abby-Mae Parkinson of the RST Racing Team – Trigon team, winning in Derby.

ELITE MEN (& U23s)
Until now, the Belgians have come, seen and conquered but as yet, none of them are on the start sheets so expect a battle between Jody Crawforth (former British Champion riding for Hargroves Cycles) and Paul Oldham (Hope Factory) who is the current British Champion.

Right: Jody Crawforth’s flying effort and a mechanical for Paul Oldham saw the Hargroves Cycles rider close the gap on Oldham in the Series.

Throw into the mix an onform Liam Killeen (Giant) and David Fletcher (Boardman Bikes) and those will probably be the four riders mixing it at the front of the race. Make that five because Steven James of Hargroves Cycles has been going great guns this season and if he can get through mechanical problem free, a top finish, even podium, is possible.

Local Jack Clarkson of Hope will be one of the leading Under 23’s. Unsure if Luke Grivell-Mellor  (Dave Mellor Cycles) is riding due to road commitments but should he, then like Clarkson, he’ll be keeping the Seniors honest and one of the favourites for an Under 23 podium place.
