Cross Champs: Steve James (Hargroves Cycles)

One of the favourites for the British Under 23 Cross title and leader of the Under 23 category in the National Trophy for Cyclo-Cross, Steven James says “I’m having a dream year at the moment”

Even before the National Trophy had begun, Steve James (Hargroves Cycles) was showing that he was not only a contender for the Under 23 series but also the title in Ipswich. In the second round of the Rapha Super Cross events, he was third behind Paul Oldham and Jody Crawforth and has shown great form through out the series.

He will certainly be one to watch at the British Cyclo-Cross championships in Ipswich. “It’s the first year I have taken ‘cross seriously” he explains to VeloUK. “It has always been part of my winter training with mountain biking being my main sport. Hargroves Cycles though has presented me with the opportunity this year to come and do it properly and so I’ve gone out and done just that.”

“It is going much better than I ever hoped and I’m having a dream year at the moment. If I can keep it together for the rest of the season, I’ll be over the moon.”

The British championships is a really big goal. I’ve had a rest for a week because it has been a pretty busy schedule for the past two months so I’ve had some time off after Bradford and now I’ll be training right through to the national champs and hopefully World’s selections; that being my main goal.”

Steven explained that for cross, especially a day like Bradford, his mountain bike experience came into its own. “The training I’m doing is strength and condition stuff, base work, with a few sprint sessions each week so not massively ‘cross specific but it seems to be working for me so I’m not inclined to change it.”

Looking back at Bradford, he says that day (weather wise) came out of the blue after a dry winter and then they had an entire seasons worth of mud in the one race. “They were crazy conditions with virtually no grip but it makes for a really fun race and very different tactically to what we have been doing” says the rider in the Green National Trophy jersey.

Steven at the head of the race with the likes of teammate at Hargroves Cycles Jody Crawforth and Paul Oldham.

While the course for Ipswich is relatively unknown at the moment, and so things like tyre choice are an unknown, if the conditions are muddy like Bradford, Steven knows just what tyres he’ll be using. “Tyre wise in Bradford and that mud, I was pretty much running on the rim with the lowest pressure as I could get away with. I was using Dugast Rhinos, you can’t beat them in the mud, they are the cross tyre for it.”

Stevens, who lives near Reading in the South of the country, says with a really healthy lead in the series, the aim now is to protect that lead and win the series in Shrewsbury after the British Champs.
“It will be a dream if I could get the national champs and national series in the first season of doing it properly. Towards the beginning of the season, I didn’t think I had it in me to lead the series and maybe win it so my goal was to see how long in races I could stay with Jody and Paul.”

“I’d start a race and get on their wheel and stay there until I blew but tactically it’s changed now with the series.” His rivals for the National Trophy crown and the British championships will probably be the same riders he’s battling with in the National trophy, Jack Clarkson and Kenta Gallagher. Steven leads Clarkson by almost 30 points and Kenta by over 50 points in the National Trophy so a victory in that is Steven’s for the taking but the championship?

That will as ever be another race altogether and speaking about one of his rivals, Scott’s Kenta Gallagher, Steven admits “we’re good mates, very competitive on the track but afterwards, no grudges …” That title challenge will for sure be a close one and good luck to Steven and thanks for the chat.
