Preview: British Cyclo-Cross Championships

After a season of regional and National Trophy races, the stars of cyclo-cross head for Ipswich for the first big weekend of racing in Britain for 2012.

Exclusive interview with former British Cyclo-Cross champion Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) ahead of his biggest race of the season in Britain. Read it here …

Ipswich’s Chantry Park, with its dramatic backdrop of the great house, is a cracking venue with rolling grasslands and tricky off-camber descents which will test the skills of the racers to the limit.
The racing takes place over two days (see schedule/rider list below) and is sure to draw the crowds keen to see the best in the business especially on day two.

Both the Men’s and Women’s events will see World class riders competing for the champion’s jersey. In the Women’s race, Helen Wyman goes for her seventh title and will perhaps have her toughest challenge yet when she returns to Britain along with rivals Nikki Harris and Gabby Day.  We can only hope so to ensure an exciting race for the gold medal.

Helen Wyman has been flying the British colours for so many years now it’s hard to see her beaten but this year’s race should be the closest for quite a while. Photo: Thomas van Bracht

The challenge from the British based riders may well come though from the likes of Annie Last who is one of the top female mountain bikers in the World and showed great form at Bradford. Within the Women’s race will also be other battles for the Veterans and Junior titles. Hannah Payton, who has been winning rounds of the National Trophy is favourite for the Junior championship while the Veterans race looks to be between favourite Louise Robinson (former World Championship Silver medallist) and Isla Rowntree.

In the Men’s race, only one rider returns to take on the British based riders, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) and he is well up for the challenge of winning the British title but what a challenge he faces. Of all the races, this is the most open simply because so many riders target this race and not the National Trophy. Making a call on who is going the quickest right now is a difficult one to make as they haven’t as yet all lined up in the one race.

As well as Field’s teammate Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles), a former champion, Ian will face one of the best line ups ever assembled for the championship. Ian Bibby, another former champion, is back in new colours, Endura Racing. He’s suffered some bad luck so far in the run up to the championships but if he has some good luck, he may well strike again in Ipswich.

Roger Hammond, the winner the last time the championships were in Ipswich, is Britain’s best ever Men’s cyclo-cross rider with his eight British titles and the Junior World title to go with his podium in Gent Wevelgem and one in the blue ribbon ‘monument’, Paris-Roubaix. Then there is one of the World’s best mountain bike riders in Liam Killeen who has been in winning form and the defending champion Paul Oldham who has been in sensational form all season.

And… we can’t forget the ever green Nick Craig! Second at the National Trophy in Bradford before Christmas, he says it’s been a while since he led a National Trophy race as he did at Peel Park. This despite a crash on the first lap which saw him lose a lot of places. Looking ahead to the championships, he says “if it’s really quick I will find it difficult but if it’s muddy, horrible and sticky, it will be more my kind of thing.”

Paul Oldham, wearing the National Trophy jersey instead of his championship stripes, wins at Bradford. His form is such that it’s hard to see who can beat him but the championship is always unpredictable…

The Other Championships
In the other races, the form for the title race will probably be closely allied to the position of the riders in the National Trophy tables (also below). The first race on the championship weekend for Veterans over 50 will, in all probability, be fought out between Mick Bell London and defending champion Steven Davies with Peter Harris in the mix.

The Veterans Over 40 title race meanwhile will see two of the favourites, Darren Atkins and Jim Bryan go head-to-head again and this could go either way. Noel Clough is probably the pick of their challengers.

The Youth races will see the usual suspects battling it out. Dan Tullett in the Under 14’s is the over whelming favourite for his event while Charlotte Broughton has dominated the Under 14 Girls until beaten in Bradford by Henrietta Colbourne who rides the championship too.

Jack Ravenscroft… one of the favourites for the Youth race

In the older Youth age category (Under 16), Jack Ravenscroft has been in great form in the National Trophy of late and may well win that race on his own but it won’t take much of a slip up by Jack for that race to become a ding-dong battle between half a dozen or so riders.

In the Girls race, the same again where Wirral youngster  Jessica Wilkinson and RST Clothing/Trigon bikes rider Grace Garner will again go head-to-head but with plenty of challengers from the likes of Sarah Lomas, Abigail van Twisk and Abby-Mae Parkinson (RST Clothing/Trigon bikes).

Day 2
On the second day of the competition, the racing begins with the Under 23 Men’s championship and a battle royal is expected between the likes of Luke Gray, Steven James (Hargroves Cycles), Jack Clarkson and Kenta Gallager. James leads the National Trophy for Under 23’s but the championship is always a special race and the above riders and others, are expected to make it a great race for the title.

Another close race is expected when the Juniors take to the course around lunchtime. Defending champion Hugo Robinson is the local favourite but there are plenty of challengers lead by Joe Moses who leads the National Series ahead of Alex Welburn, Adam Martin and Tom Armstrong.

If you can’t make it to Ipswich, then VeloUK will be there providing updates and photos of the racing.

Hugo Robinson will be defending his title on home turf in Ipswich.
