Tour of Oman: Win for 22 year old Peter Sagan

The second stage of the Tour of Oman saw 22 year old Peter Sagan of Liquigas triumph and take over the leader’s jersey from Andre Geipel.

With enough of a climb at the finish to split the field, the majority of the 140 kilometre stage was taken up by chasing down a break of four and their time out front ended within the final 10 kilometres of the stage. The major teams then took over the control of the peloton before Quick-Step’s Peter Velits put in a monster attack on the climb just before the finish. The lumpy terrain and injection of pace then caused the peloton to blow apart, and while Velits was caught Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) took up the running from eight or so riders left at the front to win the stage. Baden Cooke (GreenEDGE) and Tom-Jelte Slagter (Rabobank) rounded out the podium.

Race leader meanwhile, Andre Geipel, managed to hold on until 300 metres to go when he had to let the wheels go and he finished the stage 10th, four seconds down on Sagan. Team Sky’s director sportif Servais Knaven explained how the finale of the stage was tough. He said “It was a new finale we’d never done before so we didn’t know quite how it play out. We had some information from Rod [Ellingworth, Race coach] so we knew it was hard. Everyone gave it everything they could to stay up there for as long as possible.”

“CJ got seventh which I think on this stage is a really good result. It was 500 metres uphill and then 300m flat. It was a really hard finish but the team worked well to put him in the right position with a lead-out on the climb. They were there where they had to be so that was good to see. Tomorrow starts off downhill and should be a quick stage for the sprinters so we are looking forward to that and it’s a good chance for us.”
