Friday’s stage winner was Andre Greipel who extended his lead by sprinting to his second victory of the race, holding off Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Tony Gallopin (RadioShack-Nissan).
Sagan remains six seconds adrift in the general classification standings going into what should be the decisive climb to Green Mountain on Saturday.

A gutsy ride from Cavendish saw the world champion stay true to his word and remain in the lead group over the day’s two demanding climbs as a birthday present to friend and team-mate Bernhard Eisel. The Manxman stayed in contention until the final climb before rolling in to save himself ahead of Sunday’s sprint stage.
After the finish, Chris Sutton told the Team Sky website, “The form’s pretty good. I’ve been doing some new training with Rod [Ellingworth, Race coach]. It’s obviously working well and I’m just trying to move my strength on a bit. I’m climbing okay. I went pretty deep yesterday to try and do a perfect lead-out for Cav.”
“When you do get an opportunity you want to jump and grab it by the horns. Greipel is quick and strong so full credit to him. But it would have been nice to finish it off after what Hayman and Yogi (Ian Stannard) did there at the end. I’m frustrated as I feel like I should have won, but if you keep knocking on the door eventually it will open and you’ll get a victory.”
