Relive the highs of a Gold medal for Joanna Rowsell and Sir Chris Hoy and lots more

Chris Hoy (Keirin)
Talk us through the race Chris? “Well, first of all its great to win and hear that roar as you cross the line, I had a couple of plans, and that was plan ‘B’. I knew Bougain was going to be a threat so I let him chase the riders from New Zealand and Germany, then I had to choose the moment to go, and when you go, you have to go and you can’t ask more than that”.

Did you ever feel you could lose that race? “You can always lose, you never go into a Keirin expecting to win it’s so unpredictable, all you can do is race to your strengths. I didn’t want to race from the front; although I can still do that, but I’m trying different tactics and it’s nice to be able to win from all positions. The track is great, very similar to a lot of tracks around the world, you get so much energy from the crowd it’s amazing, as long as you don’t get overawed by it all”.

It was a different way of approaching the Kierin for you, not racing from the front. “If you noticed, they have a new rule now if your man one, you have to stay behind the derny bike, so basically if you draw one you have a disadvantage to the other five riders, they can lay off a bit and get a run at you which I think is a bit unfair”

You had to do a bit of ducking and diving in that final tonight,“Yeah Ross Edgar was impressed because that’s his sort of race. He came up to me and said nice move to get through on the inside it’s not something I normally do but every race you have to try something different, it gives you a new experience.”

“And you can learn from that, whether it works or it doesn’t. This event has been a fantastic experience in terms of racing it lays beneath the World Champs and the Olympics, but it’s been one of the most memorable events I have ever been in. The atmosphere and the noise is superb and you can see we are responding to it, and this gets the momentum building leading up to the Games”.

You could soon become the country’s most decorated Olympian. Has that crossed your mind? “You’re aware of it but you don’t think of it when you’re on the track, you are literary only thinking of your game plan. You train as hard as you can every day and take every day as it comes. In the big event all you think about is your strategy and how best you can execute it and always have a plan ‘B’ and ‘C’ today all that came together”.

How are you in terms of your preparation? “It’s difficult to say but today I hit 78.1 KPH, which is the fastest I have ever done in a Keirin, so that’s a sign I’ve got good form. But there’s more to come, I’ve not really backed off or tapered for this event”.

Jo Rowsell (Women’s Individual Pursuit)
How highs your confidence after this weekend? You have had two great wins and you’re riding very well. “My confidence is so high from last night getting the win, and that World Record as well, I was really up for today. I haven’t done any training for today at all, not even a single pursuit effort ‘seriously’. I’m not exaggerating so I just went out there to enjoy it knowing I had good form, and the teams on a winning streak so I wanted to carry that on and do a good ride, so I’m really, really happy”.

This time could you just enjoy the crowd and let them cheer you round? “Yeah, there was no need to try and hold back and work as a team, I could just go out go as hard as I wanted, and hold on to it, and hope for the best at the back end, and it paid off”.

Are you tempted to do this event in Melbourne now? “Maybe, it’s on the last day of the programme so there’s plenty of time after the team pursuit, I wouldn’t do it if it was before the team pursuit because that’s a priority but there is a couple of days of rest so maybe yeah , maybe we will see nearer the time”

Jess Varnish mentioned that you never tapered off for this event so as a pursuit team do you think you can go to the Worlds and go one better?
“Oh defiantly we have not really eased off for this we had a few easy days this week but that’s it, we were training very hard on the track in Manchester last week and put in a lot of long and hard efforts, we are working towards the Olympics not today or yesterday so defiantly there’s a lot more to come. We’re off to Majorca next week for another big training block, then another big training cycle coming up then rest for the Worlds and hopefully move up a notch”.
