The 3rd round of the Northants Cycle Racing Association Early Spring Handicap series was over 3 laps of Rockingham Forest Wheelers’ 10 mile Middleton circuit on Saturday.

The two groups of long markers worked superbly together from lap 1 to stay clear of the rest of the field. The bunch sprint for the line was won by Owen Rogers of St Ives CC in 1.22.09. He was closely followed by Warren Drew of Rockingham Forest Wheelers, David Robinson of Kettering CC, Vic Davis of Rockingham Forest Wheelers, Vic Barnett of Welland Valley Wheelers, Chantelle Rothe of 45 RC, Stuart Walters of Kettering CC, Christophe Demoulin of Peterborough CC, Lindsay Clarke of Fenland Clarion CC, with Mark Greenway of Peterborough CC making up the first 10 riders.

The race was marred by a high speed crash two miles from the finish which brought down over 20 riders. The result was many cuts and bruises, torn lycra and battered bikes but as far as the Association knows, nothing worse. The air ambulances and ‘wheeled ambulance’ did a wonderful job of getting the two most seriously injured riders quickly to hospital.
