Results: Tour of Normandy (Stage 2)

Break stays clear for Jérôme Cousin to win the stage and take leader’s jersey. Alex Blain 9th on stage but all but three now over two minutes down

Alexandr Pliuschin (Leopard Trek) started a move today that the peloton was unable to do anything about. Pliuschin was joined by Guillaume Malle and Jérôme Cousin and the three riders stayed away until the finish. They crossed the line 2:19 minutes ahead of the peloton which propelled stage winner Jérôme Cousin into the overall lead.

The 200 km stage between Colombelles and Forges-les-Eaux offered the possibility for an early coup in the GC and Pliuschin knew this and was very motivated to split up the field.
Pliuschin: “I realized that today’s stage could turn out to be decisive for the rest of the week, so I wanted to try something. When I attacked, the two French riders immediately followed. I was hoping more riders would come too, so we would have more chances to stay away, but nobody came. Once we had established a gap of a minute, I gave it my all”.

The three riders gained a maximum advantage of over fourteen minutes. The peloton tried to reel the leaders back, but didn’t succeed. Director sportif for Leopard-Trek, former pro, Adriano Baffi: “Today’s stage brings Alexandr in a good position to play for the overall win. We have a strong team here and we can make the race hard. I’m really looking forward to the next days of racing.”

Tomorrow has two stages on the menu. The morning stage is 60 kilometres long and is likely to finish in a bunch sprint. The afternoon stage is 100 km long.
