Matt Bottrill and Sarah Storey win the Men’s & Women’s categories at the tough Buxton Mountain Time Trial on roads lined by snow

Winner Matt Brottrill explains what the course was like … “The circuit for the Buxton hilly start’s in Lognor and did three laps of an 11 mile circuit taking in climbs of Lognor, which takes you to the top of Axe Edge before taking a sharp left then back in the village. The climbs saw riders using a gear of 39 x 23 at 6mph with the descent of 50+ mph.”
With five wins already under his belt this season, Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) won the event in a time of 1.26.34 holding off a challenge from Trejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy cycling team) 1.27.21, and National hill climb champion Gunnar Gronlund (RST/Trigon) 1.28.34.
Asked about the race Bottrill replied “Today was a simple task of take no risk and just get a time gap where you know you can still win! One of the big advantages of riding with a power meter is if you know you have a winning lead over a rider, you just have to hold the same power and you know your going to take some beating. So today I got a time check on Tejvan and Gunner from my mentor Peter Lavine, and just controlled the power so I did not have go into the red and take no risk.”
“With out sounding big headed, I did it well and there was only 1 second between lap’s 2 & 3. It’s like my coach Bob Tobin www.cyclingpowermeters.com always says “power is nothing without control”. I have to say I loved every minute of today. That’s the 5th time I’ve won this race.”
“My next event will be the Leicester Road hilly on Monday. I’m missing round 2 of the Rudy Project series to get a few more local miles in which will help my build-up towards the National championships ”

After waking up on Wednesday to reports that Longnor was inaccessible by road due to unseasonal and slightly unexpected snow, there was the real possibility of the event being cancelled. However, Thursday was in stark contrast to Wednesday with glorious sun all day which melted all the snow off the roads.
Under grey skies the riders, congregated in Longnor Primary school discussing the events of the previous two days. Temporary traffic lights had also appeared on the main road section of the course that morning… plenty of drama before the event even started.
Despite the traffic lights, the event went ahead as planned with 90 riders taking to the start line – the strongest line up for many years. In stark contrast to the previous year’s event, which was held in glorious sunshine, snow lined the roadside and many of the riders opted for leg-warmers.
The wind direction was not favourable with a head-wind up the 4 mile section of climbing, it was a slow day with just two riders improving on their previous years time. However the times from the top riders were still impressive as can be seen on Matt Clinton’s data from Strava http://app.strava.com/rides/6292099.
Most importantly the cakes were brilliant and the event was a massive success!
