Shutt Velo Rapide sponsored Women’s Team Race Series got of to a great start at the Eagle RC organised first event at the Hog Hill circuit when 64 riders lined up on what is always a hard racing course in sunshine but that pesky wind always blowing with Emily Barnes – Corvida Allpress winning in a bunch sprint – and a good share of the £400 in prize money on offer.

The biggest field ever for the start to a season saw the various levels of fitness beginning to tell as the fast moving bunch gradually lost riders from the rear until with halfway covered there were 40 riders in the main bunch, perhaps mainly due to the 3 cash primes that organiser Chris Baldwin had put up – Claire Galloway – For Viorad winning two of them.

With 2 laps to go Natalie Creswick (above) – MuleBar Girls shot into the lead and rapidly gained 20 seconds but coming into the finishing straight for the final lap she was riding on a rapidly deflating rear wheel and although she was able to get another one the bunch had swept past her and in the final dash for the line it was Nicola Juniper – Corvida Allpress leading out team mate Emily for the win just beating Eve Dixon – Maxgear RT into 2nd place with Sarah Brook – Mulebar Girls in 3rd.

To see so many riders on the start line and with a good race that followed really does give a sense of excitement to what looks like being another great season of women’s racing in this country.
