James writes … “I’m very pleased with my victory in the Tour of the North. It was an important milestone for me and allowed me to put down a marker for my sponsors Node4. When we looked at the field and what we were up against, frankly it looked as if we should be able to win, but that is easier said than done.

I usually tend to be working for other team members. But after the short prologue at Stormont, I was the best placed rider so when we all got into the break on the first road stage, everyone worked hard and I got the yellow jersey by one second. So after that it was up to Node4 to make sure we kept it.

The next day I also got in the winning break and drove it hard on the front to try and extend my lead and the rest of the boys played their part in the bunch. On the final day we again got in a break, this time the guy we regarded as the main threat, David McCann (25 mile record holder) missed it, so the team went on the front to make sure he did not get across.

There was some attacking on the last climb but I was able to counter these attempts and kept my leader’s jersey… It was a great team performance from Matt, Keiran and the other James, I am very grateful to them. We even took the team prize by six minutes which kind of shows how we managed to put our stamp on the race.

The added bonus for us is that believe it or not we escaped the rain everyday! There were puddles at the side of the road but we kept dry. The roads were good with 30 second road closure as we went through and the public were great. The Irish love bike racing and are very appreciative. Now for the rest of the season….”
