Report from Dot Tilbury:

Despite the overcast and cold conditions, there was a large turnout of 302 competitors at the NSC last Tuesday night for the opening round of Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man’s 2012 youth league. The novices class got the racing underway, with top girl Sydney Ella Patterson coming home ahead of Kate Morris to take the victory. Cameron Hounsell was a good third and Colby Newbold stayed clear of the chasing pack to grab a well deserved fourth. Harry Bell and Ella Whorrall completed the top six.

In the born 2007 and later age group William Curphey was too strong for breakaway partners Orry Lund. Isaac Batty and Alex Andrew in the dash for the chequered flag. Tadge Hall led George Kinnish, Myles Le Geyt, Edward Field and Rio Kelly in for fifth, with Sophie Keen taking the girls’ prize in 16th spot.

Ivan Sorby went from the gun in the born 2006 category and stayed clear to the finish. Samuel Devereau outgunned Peter Cope in the sprint for second, with Harry Price claiming fourth ahead of Harry Callin, Libbie Thompson and Charlie Convery. The fast finishing Logan Glover got past Harry Fox, Owen Collins and Lucy Barnett on the final lap to claim eighth.

In the born 2005 race Niall Colquitt outsprinted Harry Kneen for the honours, while third placed Chloe Dillon held off Mairi Harrison in the tussle for best girl. Harry Boyle was fifth followed closely by Nathan Cannell, James Scott, Oliver Sykes, Callum Salisbury and Tom Corrin.

Born 2004 winner Zac Walker made his intentions clear from the start, setting off at a fast pace and maintaining it all the way to the line. Joshua Dudley got the verdict over fellow chasers Ralf Holden, Cameron Dudley and Billy Kennedy in the battle for second, with Daniel Keen leading the rest of the field in for sixth. Megan Boardman was the leading girl in 11th position.

Port Soderick’s Thomas Skillicorn outsprinted Jonty Bregazzi and Matthew Black to bag maximum points in the born 2003 event. Tyler Hannay, Jack Christian and Matthew Cooil rounded off the top six and Darcy Cain took the girls’ award in 12th spot. Pre-race favourite Percy Hampton salvaged 13th place after a first lap crash had left him at the back of the field.

Charlie Gibson overcame Aaron Lund, James Harrison, Will Corkill and Corrin Leeming in the fight for the born 2002 honours. Nicholas Kissack led top girl Shellan Leeming in for sixth and Blae Cain kept Nathanael Tyson at bay to grab eighth. Louis Dean got the better of Tom Kermode and Ethan Quirk to fill the remaining place on the top ten leader board. The following born 2001 & later grouping was run at a steady pace, with Alex Cain winning the bunch sprint from Adam Kelly, Lucas Mudie and first girl Kaitlin Slack.

Due to the fading light, the three racing bike events were held over reduced distances. In the under 10’s race Charlie Gibson edged out Jake Wilson, Percy Hampton, Aaron Lund and Will Corkill to record his second success of the night. Charlie Moss headed Darcy Cain and Blae Cain home to secure the girls’ honours in 13th position, while 21st placed Cameron Hawes used the event to complete the final few miles of his epic Easter charity ride.

Thomas Bostock won the U/12’s race, but had to work hard to fend off Tosh Teare and Adam Kelly in the charge for the line. Chloe Crellin came out on top in the girl’s competition after early leader Emily Bridson had unshipped her chain. In the U/16’s ten lapper Matthew Davies had the edge on breakaway companions Leon Mazzone and Matthew Bostock in the final gallop. Recent Dolan series winner and top U/14 rider Matthew Draper pipped Owen Dudley for fourth and the impressive Elizabeth Holden was too quick for Conor Davies and Jonathan Wong in the battle for sixth.
