Alex Peters of CC Hackney took the stage and the final overall on Stage 2’s brutal “climb fest” stage over the Mendip hills where Jon Dibben and Tao Geohegan-Hart  both tried to win the race on their own only to be countered by Peters who outsprinted Tao Geohegan-Hart for the stage victory and with Seb Bayliss over half a minute back on Peters and Geohegan-Hart , the winner’s jersey went to Peters.

STAGE 1 SAT 14 APRIL 2012

South West rider Seb Balylis took the short journey from home to the other side of the Medips to take today’s stage 1 based around Chew Valley Lake.

Unlike last year, the weather was a good deal cooler but with the race being ran at an incredibly fast pace, the riders soon warmed up. The action got away almost immediately with one of Seb’s fellow South West riders, Jack Plummer, who rides for Bath based outfit Cadence Aero, jumping clear and carving out an advantage on his own.

This seamed to spark off a flurry of breaks over the next few laps as small groups tried to forge out a gap on the main bunch who were allowing the gaps to grow. BCDS rider Dan McKimm also managed to get into a break for some time before the first serious attack came from Hargroves Cycles rider Jon Dibben who was third in the Junior Paris-Roubaix recently.

This move got the bunch worried and a concerted effort by the teams not represented in the break eventually pulled everyone back together. Both of the BCDS riders were looking comfortable in the bunch and were prominent towards the front of the group proudly displaying the new look BCDS kit.
Former BCDS member Charley Bradley-Veilands, who now rides for the Bath based Willier-live2ride team was looking good until the midway point when a sudden movement in the bunch to avoid a pothole caused him to come down hard in Bishop Sutton, just a few miles away from his home typically enough. He quickly remounted and gave chase but with the field never dropping below 30pmh it was too much of an ask.

In the bunch, attacks were continuing to come thick and fast as riders looked to jump away before what was looking incredibly like the investment in booking the photo finish would be paying dividend with a bunch sprint on the cards.

The riders knew that with a narrow & twisty section in the final 600m, any rider carrying an advantage into the chicane stood a great chance of staying away. As it turned out though, it was a small group of around eight riders in the lead including eventual winner Bayliss, Jack Plummer, Stuart McCluskey, Scott Davies, Ed Laverack, Ben Lamb, Jo Moses, Owen James, and Joe Kirkham of Hargroves Cycles quickly followed by a fast approaching bunch that were bearing down on them as the finish line drew ever closer.

Seb Baylis from the Mid Devon CC emerged the winner taking the sprint and with it the coveted Yellow Jersey for the start of tomorrows hilly affair in the ‘Mendips’ as the riders tackle the climbs of Burrington coombe, Blagdon hill and two climbs of Harptree hill which are all certain to shake up the GC.

For the home team, BCDS, both Dan Marshal & McKimm finished safely in the bunch and start on the same time as all but eight of the breakaway riders. Lets see what their climbing is like tomorrow.

STAGE 2 SUN 15 APRIL 2012

Alex Peters of CC Hackney took the stage and the final overall on Stage 2’s brutal “climb fest” stage over the Mendip hills.

The race was full of action throughout with countless attacks, from solo efforts to groups in excess of ten trying to get away as the riders looked to put pressure on Yellow Jersey Seb Bayliss. As expected, the first major attack was launched on the climb of Blagdon which destroyed the field and broke the race into several groups.

Jon Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) used his power and time trialing ability to launch an attack and open up a healthy lead over the remains of the bunch who looked to regroup and give chase to the talented rider. The heavy roads and biting headwind over the top of the Mendips did little to slow the progress of Jon who was pulling further and further away as he hit the penultimate climb just outside of West Harptree.

The steep climb of Harptree again provided the perfect place for the race winning move to be made as Alex Peters and Tao Geohegan-Hart took flight from the remains of the bunch to give chase on his friend Dibben, reducing the gap from nearly two minutes at the bottom of the climb to less than 30 seconds by the top. With Jon clearly in their sights, several other riders were also in hot pursuit of what was looking like the race winning move with three of the country’s top Junior riders clear and it was a mad dash to get up to them.

As the junction was made on the top of the Mendip’s, and the riders started to prepare for the decent into Chewton Mendip. Tao Geohegan-Hart took the opportunity to launch an attack, catching Dibben by surprise and we once again had a sole leader rapidly pulling away. Dibben, who had been out alone for so long, was now forced into chasing and sharing the work with Peters in hunting down the leader before other riders were also able to join up with the chasing pair.

The pair worked hard and by the turn out of West Harptree, we were back to a leading trio. As soon as the turn was made up the hill for the finish, the pace began to increase and Dibben was in trouble. The effects of being out front alone for so long saw him pay the price and he was left in his own personal battle to try to hold off the advances of a small group hot on his heals.

With 1km to go, Alex Peters hit the front on the steepest part of the climb and gradually increased the pace with each pedal turn to put Tao in difficulty. Tao was also having trouble by paying for his earlier solo effort struggling to hold the wheel of Alex.

With the end in sight, Alex launched an acceleration which Tao couldn’t match and was unable to come around Alex but just hanging on enough to finish with the same time. As the seconds ticked by, it was clear that the winner was going to come from the result of stage 2 since the gap was greater than Seb or anyone else had forged out the day before.

Peters races away from Geohegan-Hart to win the stage and the overall.
