Report: Tour of Italy Stage 2 – Cav!

World champion Mark Cavendish sprinted to an emphatic win on the second stage of the Giro d’Italia while Taylor Phinney holds on to Pink jersey

Stage 2 – Herning to Herning, 206km

Team Sky’s Mark Cavendish was brilliantly led out by Geraint Thomas at the end of the 206 kilometres route around the Danish city of Herning before moving alongside Matthew Goss (Orica-GreenEDGE) and accelerating past his former team-mate for a decisive triumph. Geoffrey Soupe (FDJ-Big Mat) taking third.

It was Cavendish’s eighth individual stage victory at the Giro, his fifth success of the campaign and his first since the birth of his first child last month. The triumph saw him move to the top of the Points standings, claiming the red jersey which had been sported by Thomas on behalf of Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing), the winner of the opening time trial.

Mark Cavendish “There was lots of wind on the coast. We were monitoring things and in control. We had Ian Stannard on the front. He did 150 kilometres alone reeling in the break – he did incredible.”

“The guys were so great and they stayed together. We had a mixture of the old guard and new people. Jez Hunt, Bernie Eisel – experienced guys with G too. And guys like Pete [Kennaugh] who are pretty new and who I’ve not worked with before.”

“Everybody handled it well and we stayed together as a team. I was really looked after at the finish and kept sheltered. Geraint took me perfect and went exactly when he was supposed to. I was able to come off him and win the stage so I’m very, very happy.”

Steven de Jongh, Sports Director: “It was a really impressive result and a really good ride from the team all day. Especially Ian, he had an awesome day but it was nice to see the way they all rode. It was a big fight at the end but Cav looked comfortable in the sprint.

“Let’s hope so we can do it again tomorrow. G did a really good lead-out with the boys there. We’ll just take it day by day and tomorrow is another chance for a bunch sprint so we have an opportunity.”

Phinney Keeps The Lead
Taylor Phinney of the BMC Racing Team held onto the overall lead Sunday at the Giro d’Italia but not before some nervous moments after he crashed in the final 10 kilometers.

Phinney suffered only minor scrapes to his right side in the the crash with 8.3 kilometers left in the 206 km race. “I just found myself on the ground, having touched wheels and lost balance,” he said. “Then I couldn’t get my chain back on. So I kind of made a second prologue effort. I was quite scared there for a second that I was going to lose the jersey.”

With the help of teammates Danilo Wyss and Alessandro Ballan, the former U.S. national time trial champion mounted a furious chase to regain the peloton, which was more than half a minute ahead. He regained contact with the back of the field with 4.6 km to go. “I had a lot of adrenaline going,” he said. “You can’t really give a sigh of relief once you get to the back of the pack because there could be splits in it. Then there was that crash with 500 meters to go.”

Phinney was not involved in a crash on the final turn and neither was BMC Racing Team’s Thor Hushovd, who made a bid for the stage win and finshed seventh. Assistant Director Max Sciandri said the BMC Racing Team performed well in defense of Phinney, the youngest rider (21 years old) to lead the Giro since the late Laurent Fignon in 1982. “The team did a great job and seventh place for Thor is a confidence boost for him after a bit of bad luck so far this year,” Sciandri said. “Taylor’s in pink, so we’re happy.”
