This year’s Rudy Project Time Trial Series reached its halfway point on Saturday with the Doncaster Wheelers event at Beckingham, near Retford where Matt Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) and Julia Shaw (www.drag2zero.com) won the Men’s and Women’s categories. The country’s finest time trialists covered two laps of a undulating course and with high winds and hot temperatures, it proved to be a tough race over the 26.5 mile course (men).

With a silver medal in last weekend’s National 10 mile championships, Matthew Bottrill took the victory in the men’s race from team mate Jeff Jones in a time of 56.00 from Jones (58.23). After having a 4am wake up call to get out for work in his job as a postman, taking the win took a lot of help and planning.

“Today my day started prepping the mail ready for delivery and then delivering it and while I am pretty fast at my job, I’m not superman! So today some of my work colleges, Jason Lavine, David Berkinshaw and Karen Shaw, gave me a hand to help me get to the race. So I can’t thank them enough for that. I then finished my delivery and got home half an hour before leaving for the race, just in time for a pre race meal of muesli and a Zip-vit protein bar! I then had an 80 mile drive thanks to my sponsor Martin Garner Mg Decor and then it was time to get motivated and race!. I think the key to any day like this is to plan your day out and be prepared the day before”.

Back to the race, the heat played a big part in the days race and riders would suffer on the second of the two laps. Bottrill did an opening lap of 27.35, 56 seconds up on team mate, Jones and 1 minute 12 seconds on Matthew Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles). But with the sun at full strength, riders started to fade and Bottrill started to opening a larger margin over the field, giving him a winning margin of 2 minutes 23 seconds and an average speed of 28.4mph.

“I think a mistake a lot of riders would have made today is not staying aerodynamic on their bikes. Its always harder to produce high power when its this hot so I just stayed as aero has possible and forgot about power and it paid off”. With first and second in the men’s race and Julia Shaw winning the women’s event, www.drag2zero.com unsurprisingly were the team victors.

With Drag2zero team winning more events then ever this year, we asked Matt about what goes into to making the team so successful? “Basically it comes down to the help from Simon Smart and his wife Natalie. They put a lot of hard work into making sure all the riders have the help they need. The windtunnel plays a big part in this. You only have to look at my own bike set up, Frame, wheels, skinsuit, overshoes and position all made and achieved by www.smartaerotechnology.com. I like to call it doing it the SMART way!”
