The most important single day road races in Britain attracts top quality fields for the Men’s and Women’s Road Race Championships in North Yorkshire

The British Road Race Championships return to North Yorkshire this year on a new circuit at Ryedale and both the Men’s and Women’s Road Races have the best of British riders, from those based here to those based in Europe.

In the Men’s race, there are so many stand out names. Team Sky are the dominant team with nine riders on the list but no defending champion Bradley Wiggins. Whether that means he rides or doesn’t is uncertain but even without him, the team have the 2010 champion Geraint Thomas and a rider who may well want that title more than any other after so many Silver medals, Peter Kenaugh.
With Olympic selection in the offing, that too may add an edge to those wanting to get their name out there. Another former champion, twice over in fact, Jeremy Hunt fits into that category riding for Team Sky but the rider everyone will look to is the one in the rainbow stripes, Mark Cavendish.
Outside of Team Sky though, there are plenty of riders capable of matching the World Tour outfit. Adam Blythe has had his share of success in Europe and is on the list while a rider who has not figured in the racing much but knows what it takes to be up there, is former Silver medallist Daniel Lloyd (IG-Sigma Sport).
As well as former champions such as Kristian House (RCS), Russell Downing (Endura Racing) and Hamish Haynes, the race sees quite a few riders competing who have ridden well in the Ryedale GP in previous years.

Rob Partridge (Endura Racing), Evan Oliphant (Raleigh-GAC), European star performer Jonathan Tiernan-Locke (Endura Racing), Ben Greenwood (VanillaBikes.com) and riders such as Steve Cummings (BMC )and Yanto Barker (UK Youth) who have been medallists in the Road Race Champs before.
There are so many more possible contenders on paper. Mark Christian (AN Post/Dolan Bikes) is a very strong rider while Doug Dewey’s coach tells me the Under 23 TT Champion is producing power figures better than anything he’s produced before and he may slip under the radar of the big names.
And then there’s Scott Thwaites who has been such an impressive rider in the Halfords Tour Series as well as winning Premier Calendar road races. He’s one of many in the Endura Racing team that are bound to figure in the action at the sharp end of the race.
In the women’s race, Elizabeth Armitstead , current champion, returns as does multiple great in the championship, Nicole Cooke and another former winner Emma Pooley.
These riders, along with another entrant, Sharon Laws, have had the championship to themselves the last few years and it will be interesting to see who, if anybody, can match them. Sarah Storey may be one as could Catherine Williamson, Katie Colclough and Lucy Martin. Who ever wins, it will be an attacking race!
