Paul Burgoine writes … possibly the only valid reason to be getting up at six on a Sunday morning is to go out and support your club event. The race was held on a rolling course around the Whitwell area in Hertfordshire, a circuit like many others notorious for punctures.

The first two laps were seemingly quite; observed from my position on the finish line but the following laps seemed pretty steady still with the group staying together, at least from my view point anyway. With three laps remaining Dermot Kealey (Finchley RT) put in a big effort on the climb near to the finish and quickly built up a small gap with a group of four or so forming a chase group just in front of the peloton

With two laps remaining the peloton was together again but with a constant stream of attacks, but with none of them sticking, on the Bell lap there were more attacks from Steve Nunn and Patrick Schills (Velo Schills Interbike) all to no avail. The race finally came down to a sprint finish won by Tim Butt (Maldon Dist) from Chris Spence (Felt) and Jason Gurney (Twenty 3C).

Result

1. Tim Butt (Maldon Dist)
2. Chris Spence (Felt)
3. Jason Gurney (Twenty 3C)
4. Vince Divine (Finchley RT)
5. Gray Turnock (Finsbury Park)
6. Sam Gilzean (Welwyn Wheelers)
