The race …

With the wind gusting, the rain falling and temperatures getting ever cooler, over 100 riders set off on the Beaumont Trophy in Stamfordham at 1pm with favourite Jon Lock on the front row as they set off for the first of the 22 mile loops that takes in the Ryalls.

Peter Williams leads Evan Oliphant in the early break at the Beaumont Trophy. They went clear after only five or six miles and in the rain, opened up a gap of well over three minutes after the first lap.

The peloton not concerned at the lead of the two out front.

The fire is lit and the gas turned up as Russell Downing (Endura Racing) hits it up the climb out of Stamfordham with Jon Locke. Five Endura Racing riders are said to be in the break. Oil Beckingsale is another.

Start of the finishing circuit

Simon Richardson of IG Sigma Sport leads a break of five with Bernie Sulzberger (Raleigh GAC) and Rob Partridge (Endura Racing).

Chasing group of nine including Wouter Sybrandy (IG Sigma Sport), Kit Gilham (Herablife), Liam Holohan (Raleigh GAC) and Paul Voss (Endura Racing).

Luke Grivell-Mellor (RCS) leads his team on the front of the second chase group at the start of three finishing circuits.

Two laps to go and UK Youth are on the front with RRC trying to close the race down and with the gaps small enough, they may just do that!

Bell Lap, Peter Williams, one of the first attackers after only 5 miles, still driving it, this time at the head of the front group ahead of Ben Grenda. Behind tthis group were two chasers, Mike Northey and Dale Appleby and then the peloton splitting into small groups…  Full gas!

Afterwards Russell Downing said “It was a bizarre old race. I think it goes to show how professional the sport is now in Britain. We split it as a team and normally we’d have ridden away because we rode so hard but it still came back together and I think Rapha did an amazing job.” Read more of what he, Scott Thwaites and Julian Winn had to say by clicking here
