Tour of Spain: Rodriguez increases his lead

Joaquim Rodriguez outclasses the other climbers on the Mirador de Ezaro with it’s 29% slopes for the summit finish to increase his lead over his rivals for the race win

Katusha’s race leader in the 2012 Tour of Spain, Joaquim Rodriguez won his second stage of the race and more importantly took time out of Contador, Valverde and Froome on the steep slopes to the finish at Mirador de Ezaro. Going into the stage, he had a mere second on favourite Contador but the very steep finish suited the rider in the red jersey and he was able to put time into everyone to win and now leads Contador by 13 seconds.

Both Rodriguez and Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff) were able to drop Valverde and Froome over the final part of this summit finish which suited Rodriguez the most and he was able to accelerate away from Contador to take the stage and while the places on the GC haven’t changed at the top, the gaps between the riders have.

The twelfth stage saw four escapees maintain a solid lead to the foot of the final climb where upon they were reeled in one-by-one. The break worked well together, getting a gap of more than seven minutes at one point during the stage. However, with less than 5km to go, the gap was only a minute, and that was not enough once the break reached Category 3 climb Mirador de Ezaro. Quickstep’s Kevin De Weert said “Today, I really believed that the breakaway could have made it. But, to stay away we needed at least two minutes at the bottom of the last steep climb. The problem was that Katusha and Movistar pulled the whole day to catch us and make the final.”

“Anyway, today we tried very hard from the beginning. All of the team tried to get into the breakaway and I was the lucky one. It wasn’t easy. The first two hours the speed was really high. At the finish, we had something like 44 km/h average speed. In the breakaway everybody did his job, we never went easy because the peloton was riding really fast; they never gave up. In the last part of the race, we had also a headwind. It’s a pity, but that’s cycling sometimes. For sure I will keep trying and fighting. The team is still motivated and we really want to go for a stage win in the next days.”

With the break caught, the team leaders then went into battle on the final climb that had an average gradient of 13% and this saw the peloton explode as Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank’s Alberto Contador put in a powerful attack with the race leader on his wheel. Rodriguez then made his move by kicking again and taking the stage win while Contador came second, crucially taking more seconds on his rivals, Chris Froome (Sky) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar).

Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank sports director, Bradley McGee was rather optimistic after today’s stage saying “Alberto is simply looking stronger and stronger and today he was calm, composed and kept his cool and he followed Rodriguez on a climb that was simply tailor-made for a rider like him.”

It took over 40 miles but a break eventually escaped, Amael Moinard (BMC), Cameron Meyer (Orica-GreenEdge), Mikel Astarloza (Euskaltel) and Kevin De Weert (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).  Photo: http://www.lavuelta.com

“It was pretty much expected that he took the win but it was satisfying to see Alberto alone with him towards the final steep section when the other GC favourites lost touch. Tomorrow, we have a day for the sprinters or even a breakaway but the stages on Saturday and Sunday fit us well and they are suitable for attacks and at some point, we’re going to do make the difference”.

Third place for Alejandro Valverde on the Galician wall came after excellent work from his Movistar Team in the closing stages. Valverde gave it his best on the short category 3 climb with slopes up to 29% putting an end to the 190km stage twelve from Vilagarcía de Arousa.

Valverde responded by riding the climb at his own pace after the strong attacks from Contador and Rodríguez and was pleased to take time on Froome. Alejandro Valverde explained “we had checked the climb through videos on the internet but I didn’t really know it.”

“This was a finish that suited Rodriguez and Contador perfectly and when the latter attacked, I didn’t even think about going for his wheel. I knew clearly I had to set my own pace so as to lose as little time as possible and then ride the last 200 meters full throttle.”

“I still have good racing condition but such explosive finishes are not good for me and I suffer. Now I’m 1.20 down, but closer to the podium than before, and that’s something to be happy about. We’ll see how my legs do for the three Asturian stages, where most of this Vuelta will get sorted out. Alberto and Purito are really strong while Froome seems to be suffering from the efforts in the Tour but he’s still in the fight, so this contest is going to be hard.”
