Show of Strength from Twenty3c as Simon Cannings wins the category 3/4 Great Barford GP

Milton Keynes based www.twenty3c.co.uk proved too strong for the rest of the field at Bedfordshire Road Cycling Club’s Great Barford Grand Prix. The category 3/4 race took place over 5.75 laps of a mainly flat but exposed course of just over 15km in North Bedfordshire, centred around the village of Great Barford.

Main bunch tackling the finishing climb

Despite many attempts at breaks riders struggled to make any headway over the main bunch, finding the going too fast when aided by the stiff breeze and too tough when heading into it. That was until the 4th lap when Twenty3c’s Steve Torley took the initiative just before the finishing climb, taking the 2nd prime in the process and causing a split in the field. Several riders attempted to get across, to form a group with Torley, but were soon brought in by the fast moving main bunch. This eventually led to the undoing of Torley who was caught a lap later shortly after taking the bell.

The large bunch of around 50 riders took the final bend with 500 metres to go, most of which consisted of a 6% climb. Two riders finished clear of the by then strung out bunch with Twenty3c’s Simon Cannings crossing the line first to take a fine win just ahead of junior Alex Anderson of Welwyn Wheelers.

This was the first road racing promotion by Bedfordshire Road Cycling Club in many years, raced over a new course of quiet country lanes, which proved popular with both riders and spectators.
