Press Release from National Track Championships (Anna Flanders)
A round up of the headlines from day three of the British Cycling National Track Championships at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester
Great Britain cyclist Becky James successfully retained her national Sprint title at the British National Track Championships in Manchester tonight with a convincing win in the final. The 20 year old from Abergavenny, a member of the British Cycling Olympic Academy Programme, defeated rival Victoria Williamson 2-0 in the final. Upcoming talent 17 year old Danielle Khan added a senior bronze medal to the junior national title she won on the same track in August.
James will look to make it a hat-trick of titles when she defends the Keirin title she won in emphatic style in 2011 on Sunday, the final day of competition. The titles top off a great week for James, who on Wednesday was selected to represent Great Britain at October’s UCI Track Cycling World Cup round in Cali, Columbia.
An emotional James spoke after the race: “I’ve never had this many people from my family come to watch. I’m so happy to have everyone here. They all sat in the front row and cried. It means a lot to me. It’s been a brilliant two events. I hit the targets I wanted to hit. I’m still in a big training phase. I’m looking ahead to Sunday now.â€
Paralympic and World champion Mark Colbourne took his second national title of the week, adding the 3km Para-Cycling Pursuit title to the 200m FS TT title he won on Thursday night. The silver medal went to tandem pairing of Sophie Thornhill and Jessica Atkinson, their third medal of the championships and Alice Hayden and pilot Emily Thoday won the bronze. There was a new British record in the MC2 category for Mazyar Ossamisaeed with 4.37.717.
Colbourne commented after the race: “I think for me not being on the bike for two weeks, recovering from London, and with media commitments I actually felt healthy. I’m very privileged to race in a national championships for my Para-cycling team. I really enjoyed it and I’m just glad I did actually finish the race.â€
“some of these riders obviously have youth on their side, I’m 42 now, so I’m no spring chicken. But, at the same time, I work very hard at my job. You have to pace it like a 10 mile time trial or you hit the quicksand.â€
A thrilling men’s Keirin final saw British Cycling Olympic Podium Programme athlete Matt Crampton take the title with a perfectly timed sprint for the line. Olympic Development Programme rider Matt Rotherham pushed Crampton close but had to settle for silver after being forced to take the long way round on the track. Multiple national champion Craig Maclean made a welcome return to the podium, nipping in to take the bronze from Lewis Oliva on the line.
Matt Crampton spoke after his win: “Today I felt nervous, I had tingles all over. You really, really want it when you get up there. I’ve not had a great year so it’s nice to top it off with a win here in an event that’s so called my favourite, it’s really special.â€
Corrine Hall produced a determined ride to take the women’s Point Race title ahead of Charline Joiner and former National Circuit Race Champion Hannah Barnes, in a field that also contained Hall’s Node4-Giordana teammate and double Junior Road World Champion Lucy Garner. Joiner has dominated the early points scoring but a gutsy ride by Hall saw her be the only rider to claim the bonus 20 points for lapping the field. A strong finish saw her secure the gold medal.
Corrine Hall commented after the race: “I was struggling really early on, I really didn’t think I could do it [mid-way through the race] but I was digging in and getting the points. This is the title I wanted. I came close a couple of years ago, so it made me try a little harder. I still can’t believe I’ve won it.â€
There was also a first national champion’s jersey for Adam Duggleby who won gold in the men’s Scratch Race ahead of Jon Dibben and Adam Yates who took silver and bronze respectively. Duggleby spoke after the race: “I was ecstatic when I crossed the finish line. I’ve been racing since I was 13 and I’m 27 now. This is the first national jersey I’ve worn. I wanted to win one at least and today was the day.â€
