Anna Flanders report and reactions from the fifth and final day of competition at the British Cycling National Track Championships at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester

British Cycling Olympic Academy sprinter Becky James completed the perfect week at the British Cycling National Track Championships today when she collected her fourth title in five days, successfully defending the Keirin title she won last year. The 20 year old from Abergavenny added to the 500mTT, Sprint and Team Sprint titles she won earlier in the week.

Already earmarked as a successor to “Queen of the Track” Victoria Pendleton’s throne, James is showing great form going into the first round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Cali, Columbia, next month, at which it was announced last week she has been selected to represent Great Britain.

Becky James commented: “I’m really chuffed and I had in my head what I wanted to achieve and I think it went better than expected. The track nationals is a big event for me. I’m really happy because it’s a great start to the season.”

Looking to the future she said: “I’m taking it step at a time and I’ve got the world championships as my target in the next few years and then hopefully Rio 2016.”

In the final race of the 2012 championships, the country’s top sprinters were out in force for the hotly contested Men’s Team Sprint which was won in the end by the NW Region B squad of David Daniell, Lewis Oliva and Peter Mitchell in 45.036, just two tenths of a second in front of the City of Edinburgh RC team of Bruce Croall, John Paul and new Sprint champion Callum Skinner.

The NW Region A squad of multiple national champion Craig MacLean, Paralympian Jody Cundy MBE and Matt Crampton took bronze, getting the better of VC St Raphael’s Andrew Leveton, Rowan Elliot and David Heald. The Team Sprint gold will come as some consolation to Lewis Oliva who narrowly missed out on the individual Sprint title on Saturday night.

GB Olympic Academy rider Simon Yates secured the Omnium title after an impressive display of consistent racing across all four of the events. The 100% ME rider, who was runner up in 2011, won both the 15 km Points and Elimination races and was second in the Flying Lap Time Trial meaning he went into the final Scratch race with a 12 point cushion. Yates finished third behind teammate George Atkins in that race but it was enough to wrap up the title. Atkins went home with the bronze whilst Joseph Kelly made it a 100% ME 1-2-3 with silver.

Speaking after the race, Yates told of his joy at becoming national champion: “It’s a great feeling and I couldn’t ask for more. It’s been a great couple of days and just to top it off I’m national champion. It’s always important and it’s always nice to win a national title. I’ve just come off the road and it’s nice to come on here and still perform.”

Elinor Barker and her Scott Contessa Epic team won the battle of the junior world road champions in the Women’s Team Pursuit final, catching the Node4-Giordana trio of double Junior World Road Race Champion and newly crowned National Individual Pursuit Champion Lucy Garner, National Points Race Champion Corrine Hall and Harriet Owen in 2.45.778. The third place ride off was won by Team Ibis Cycles (Hannah Barnes, Kayleigh Brogan and Eileen Roe) who caught VC St Raphael (Caroline Harding, Eleanor Jones and Adel Tyson-Bloor) in 2.26.449.

Speaking after the race, British Cycling Olympic Development Programme athlete Emily Kay commented: “The Team Pursuit forms a great basis for riding across a number of events, it’s something I’ll stick with the Team Pursuit and I’m really pleased to win this title.”

Teammate Amy Roberts added: “We had a clear plan that our coach had mapped out. A part of that was catching the other team so we were pleased as a team to do that. It’s a great achievement for the three of us to win such a title which is right up there with all the others.”

Lucy Garner and Harriet Owen (Node4-Giordana) retained their Women’s Madison title in emphatic style in a race that exploded into life in the latter stages. The pair finished 8 points ahead of closest rivals Emily Kay and Amy Roberts with Garner winning the final sprint in her now trademark style. Garner and Owen demonstrated expertly timed changes and scintillating sprinting which saw them collect gold, Garner’s second of the championships. Hannah Barnes and Eileen Roe (Team Ibis Cycles) took the bronze.

The Junior Men’s Madison title went to the Hargroves Cycles pair of Jon Dibben and Sam Lowe who produced a commanding performance to take gold ahead of Tao Geoghegen-Hart and Oliver Wood, with Jake Kelly and Jacob Scott taking bronze. The winning pair, who are both British Cycling Olympic Development Programme athletes, looked a class act throughout and dominated the intermediate sprints, finally taking the title by 9 points.
