DAY 1 REPORT & RESULTS

Jess Varnish and Becky James again upheld the hopes of British fans with medals in the Women’s Sprint but there was disaster for Jason Kenny and Lewis Oliva as they crashed in the Men’s Keirin. In other events, Junior Jon Dibben had a superb day with a win in the Pursuit and third in the Kilo to finish the day in 5th place overall in the Men’s Omnium.

Laura Trott was back to her tactical best with a win in the Women’s Elimination race while Andy Tennant got back on his bike after his high speed crash in the Team Pursuit to finish fifth in the Men’s Pursuit.

Women’s Sprint
Jess Varnish and Becky James repeated their medal winning performances from Cali (Round 1 of the World Cup) in the Women’s Sprint with Varnish this time getting the Silver medal and James the bronze.

The colour of the medals they were racing for was decided in the semi final when Becky James and Jessica Varnish went head-to-head. After the first two legs of the semi-final, the GB teammates were one all with it all coming down to the decider for the chance to race for Gold. There was nothing between them on the track and the battle for the final crucial win had the crowd on the edge of their seats.

On the line in yet another tight finish for the judges, Varnish took the verdict to proceed to the Gold medal while James was relegated to fight for the Bronze.

Vogel took the shine out of Varnish in the opening race of the gold medal Women’s Sprint final with a solid performance to go one up. The second race followed in the same vein as Varnish attempted to go out early only for Vogel to come back and take the win and secure gold.

James took the first of three races in the battle for the Bronze medal but Lee came back in the second to force a deciding duel where James, a former double world junior sprint champion, was simply too fast for Lee and she joined Varnish on the podium to the cheers of the crowd.
Jess Varnish, an ambassador for her father’s business V-Sprint said: “I’m really happy. It’s another level now when you get into a final. I just want to be able to step it up another level now. I’m not in the best shape, so I’ve not played all my cards.”

Talking about her race with James in the semi, Jess explained “In the second race I saw what I did wrong and I was shocked. It’s always hard to come back from that and I was really happy to beat her. It’s really nice to gain experience at the moment and build on that leading up to the Worlds.”

James meanwhile said: “I’m so happy. It’s been such a hard day, getting three rides against Jess was really tough and then missing out on the gold/silver ride-off was hard. I had to get my head round it and I did not want to come away with no medal, so I’m really happy. It’s difficult going to three rides in the final but it all worked out in the end.”

Men’s Keirin
No medals for GB in this race after favourite Jason Kenny crashed out in the final for the medals. When the gold medal race eventually got underway – after a false start by Japan’s rider Takashi Sakamoto, a faulty gun and a few issues with the derny – it was Australia’s Peter Lewis at the front and Kenny trailing in third.

Once the derny left the track, and the battle commenced for command of the race, it was Kenny and German rider Stefan Boetticher who went head-to-head. However, there was a dramatic twist as Kenny and Boetticher clashed with Kenny crashing out taking France’s rider Quentin Lafargue with him. In the end Boetticher held his nerve and took the gold. Earlier on in Round 2, there was more bad luck for British riders as Welshman Lewis Oliva crashed with Australia’s Andrew Taylor.

GB National Sprint coach Iain Dyer explained “he looks a bit second hand and he feels a little bit second hand. That skinsuit’s already in the bin and other than that he’s doing okay for a crash at 75kph, which was how fast he was going when his power meter stopped working.”

Men’s Individual Pursuit
Martyn Irvine and Lasse Norman Hansen went head-to-head for the gold after having qualified fastest in the first session of the day. Hansen made the better start and built up a good lead by the first time check. The Irishman, one of the riders of the series, was unable to close that gap and the Dane carried on to win adding another gold medal to the Team Pursuit medal he won the day before whilst for Irvine, it was a second Silver after the Scratch race the day before.

The bronze medal race started with Spanish rider David Muntaner Juaneda taking an early advantage and building a two second lead at the midway point. The gap was too much for the New Zealand rider Dylan Kennett to pull back and Muntaner Juaneda took the bronze.

Men’s Omnium
Great Britain’s Jon Dibben, who was a Junior racing for Hargroves Cycles until October, came out on top in the individual pursuit after an awesome ride. The scratch race started with the home crowd hoping for another win by the talented Dibben.

He faced stiff competition in world champion Australian Glenn O’Shea who was involved in a number of break-away groups in the early stages. In the end it was Mathias Wichmann Krigbaum, Alexey Lyalko and Eiya Hashimoto who succeeded in lapping the main group and they went on to claim the top three positions.

Heading into the last event of the Omnium, the table was tight at the top with only two points separating the top three. Dibben put in a great time in the Kilo with third behind Lucas Liss who denied Aussie O’Shea the Gold medal overall.
The young Dibben said afterwards “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s my first time riding in front of a big home crowd where we had massive support. Rio 2016 is a big aim for me”.

Women’s Omnium
In the first round of the women’s Omnium Flying Lap, the current world champion Laura Trott came an unexpected fourth with the Australian, Ashlee Ankudinoff, taking the win with a very rapid performance. Trott then finished the second event, the Points race in ninth and despite a very strong performance in the Team Pursuit, it was clear that she wasn’t in the same dominating form she has been this year. Or was she?

The elimination race didn’t start well with heavy crash for a rider who had to be taken off on a stretcher. After the restart, Trott was brilliant, riding a great tactical race with an enthralling last lap sprint to take the win and leaving the crowd on their feet after yet another awesome ride by a British rider. The Women’s Omnium continues on day 3 of the event.
