On a perfect Winter afternoon there was another full entry for the 4th cat race with slightly more modest fields for both 3rd and E/1/2/3 category races.

In the 4th cat race, the Neon-Digital Prime kicked things off after 22 minutes of racing; this helped split the field with Ben Smithers, taking it from Philip Hann and Ian Phillips. This was after Stevenage team mates Sab Knoll and Neil Fraser had broken clear. In the finale it came down to a very tidy bunch finish with Ian Phillips, holding off James Bird (unattached) from James Coleman, (Cadence RT). The random prize was awarded to 10th place finisher James Walsby (Catford CC) who will ‘go faster’ courtesy of a WyndyMilla cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre.

The 3rd cat race action was a little disappointing. There were individual efforts but they were brought back immediately by the main group. Greg Wiltshire (Kingston Wheelers) won the Neon-Digital Prime from Ed Rose (Progression/bikelux) and Andrew Strong (unattached) but this did little to break up the main group. In the group sprint Graham York (Twickenham CC) just got the verdict from Jacek Redar (twice 2nd now!) with Greg Wiltshire featuring again in 3rd. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 22nd place finisher Melissa Brand (Pretorius Bikes) who receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

The E/1/2/3 race was a complete contrast and with much at stake for the overall win, the attacking started very early with Connall Yates (InGear Quickvit Trainsharp) riding away alone. It was a bold and courageous move by the Trainsharp rider and he showed total commitment.

Another totally committed ride was by Ben Sumner (Beeline RT) who broke away from the main group and clawed his way up to Yates. Yates took the Neon-Digital Prime and they worked well together until 5 km to go when Yates’s earlier efforts told and Sumner moved clear on Doug’s climb.

It got even more thrilling with 2 km to go when through the efforts of James Norris (High Wycombe CC), Vince Halpern (Handsling) and Richard Prebble (Node4-Giordana Racing) the gap closed to 15 seconds. Prebble showed his strength and class to catch Yates, but Sumner was home first for a brilliant win. To his credit Prebble seemed to hold back allowing Yates a thoroughly deserved second place.

Alan Strang (Dulwich Paragon) led in Norris and Halpern, with Jo Skelton (Look Mum No Hands!) filling the next few places in the top ten. A first class circuit race, worthy of its status.

Race 3, 15th December | 4th Cats 13:00 | E/1/2/3 14:10 | 3rd Cats 14:11
