Gutiérrez and former Italian champion and three time European number 1 Visconti lead Spanish team Movistar at the Tour Down Under which starts on January 20
Santos Tour Down Under veterans José JoaquÃn Rojas and Iván Gutiérrez will return to the race this month with the Spanish registered Movistar Team. Rojas, a sprinter and six-time finisher of the race, was third overall and won the Cycle Instead Young Rider Jersey in both 2008 and 2009.
Gutiérrez, who has ridden the South Australian event four times, is a three-time Spanish time trial champion with more than 20 victories to his name. Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur says Movistar was ranked fifth in this year’s UCI WorldTour standings and hopes to improve on that in 2013. “Sprinters such as Rojas will find plenty of challenges across the race route, while all-rounders and climbers are catered for as well,†said Turtur.
The Movistar Team line-up also boasts 2012 Vuelta a Castilla y León champion Javi Moreno and Italy’s Eros Capecchi, who finished first in the Gran Premio di Lugano. Costa Rican rider Andrey Amador, a stage winner at this year’s Giro d’Italia and a hero in his home nation, also features on the roster.
The Movistar Team for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by Team Manager José Luis Arrieta (ESP) and includes riders:
Andrey Amador (CRC)
Iván Gutiérrez (ESP)
Eros Capecchi (ITA)
José Herrada (ESP)
Javi Moreno (ESP)
José JoaquÃn Rojas (ESP)
Giovanni Visconti (ITA)
The 2013 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 20 to 27 January 2013. On Sunday 20 January the world’s cycling elite will contest an exciting 51km circuit race, the People’s Choice Classic as the curtain raiser for the six stage Santos Tour Down Under being raced over a total distance of 758.5km.
