After possibly the greatest battle the Tour of Oman has ever witnessed, race leader Chris Froome captured his very first stage win, only just beating Alberto Contador to the line. The Kenyan born rider therefore increases his overall leadership with one day to go.

After yesterday’s demanding stage up Green Mountain, it was an early start for the 141 remaining riders of the Tour of Oman for stage 5 of the event. While former race leader and two-time stage winner Peter Sagan was forced to quit due to illness, the peloton took off just after ten o’clock for a 144kms ride to Boshar and the Ministry of Housing.

The race conditions were ideal. Cloud cover created cooler conditions than the preceding days, ideal for a cycle race and the difficult stage it would turn out to be. With Chris Froome leading the Overall standing heading into this fifth day, the British supporters in Muscat began to take to the road. Helen Graham explained “Most of the kids with me are from a British school in Muscat – although not all are British. They’re here to experience cycling. The Olympics has given them all a base of knowledge for sport. They all think it’s brilliant that they can meet Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome here.”

“It’s inspiring for the younger generation and exciting for the parents, too. We also have two little girls that have been interviewing the riders and all of them have been great with their time. It’s really fantastic that this is on our doorstep” she added.

After a very fast start, nine riders broke away after 11 kilometres: well known ‘cross rider turned roadie, Stybar, Trentin (both OPQ), Van Avermaet (BMC), Irizar (RLT), Hernandez (TST), Grivko (AST), Kuchynski (KAT), Minard (ALM) and Schillinger (TNE). At km 20, they enjoyed a 1’35 lead that grew to 2’45 at the first intermediate sprint (km 60.4), won by Stybar ahead of Minard and Kuchynski.

First at the top of the first climb of the day at Boucher Alamrat (km 102) was Hernandez in front of Stybar and Schillinger while the peloton remained 2’35 adrift. On the second climb of the hill, the real battle between the favourites started. Again Hernandez was first to the top (km 116.5) in front of Stybar and Van Avermaet with a slim 15” lead over Contador (TST) and 18” over Froome (SKY).

All the breakaway riders were finally caught at km 120. On the third and final climb, Contador continued attacking, never quite getting rid of Froome, while Green Jersey Gallopin (RLT) and Wiggins (SKY) were dropped well behind. Three men managed to breakaway: Contador, Rodriguez and Froome reaching the top in that order.

Their gap grew on their final descent heading back towards Muscat over a group of seven riders including Cadel Evans. With three kilometres left, the front three had a 20” lead over the Evans group and the stage win finally came down to a three-man sprint won by Froome, in front of Contador and Rodriguez. Evans crossed the finish line just 4” adrift.

In the new overall standings, with one stage to go, Froome now has a 27” lead over Contador and 39” over Evans. Tomorrow’s sixth and final stage will will witness the race finale on the Matrah Corniche. Starting at Hawit Nagam Park in Quryat, at 1140 am the peleton will have one modest climb at Al Mishaf before heading back into town for a three lap circuit of the Corniche.

After the stage Chris Froome talked about his day on the team website and how it was teamwork which set up the victory. “After yesterday, I didn’t have much time to play with but the team controlled the race from the start and got on the front with Christian Knees and Joe Dombrowski. This is Joe’s first race as a professional so he did an outstanding job to get to the first mountain pass having worked on the front and also to take us over that climb.

“The team tried to keep things together as well as they could and coming towards the final two climbs Saxo Bank and our rivals lit up the race and made it very hard. That left me isolated with Richie Porte to look after me. He did a fantastic job, taking me up to the final climb where I was able to cover the moves from Contador.”

“It was a really exciting finish coming down to a sprint between me, Alberto and Rodriguez. Luckily I just managed to get the better of them on the line.” With one final stage remaining in the race Froome is hopeful that the carrot of a bunch finish will entice other teams into helping control the race. “Tomorrow, hopefully the sprinters’ teams will take advantage of the flatter profile and it should end in a sprint if all goes to plan. I’ve extended my lead to 27 seconds so it puts us in a good place going into tomorrow’s stage.”

Cadel Evans (BMC) dropped from 2nd to 3rd on GC and said afterwards “For Alberto to overtake me on the general classification, he had to work his team a lot,” Evans said. “His team worked well, and, in the end, it succeeded for them. I consolidated my losses and tried to play it in the final.”

“I expected the group to come back in the end, but they didn’t come back.” Evan’s teammate Van Avermaet spent the day out front saying “It was a good day for me, especially being in the breakaway was a good training for the upcoming Belgian races. We did good work for Cadel and it was also good for myself. Only when Contador attacked was it too hard for me. We are riding for the team classification and that motivates me.”
