Gold for Becky James in the Women’s Sprint puts GB on top of the medal table in the Track Cycling World Championships on Day 4
![]() |
Eight years after Victoria Pendleton won her first World title in Los Angeles and went on to dominate the world of Women’s sprinting before retiring post London Olympics, young Becky James from Wales has won her first World title.
Leading from start to finish, the former World Junior champion lost only one match on her way to winning the blue ribbon event, the Sprint. Up against German Kristina Vogel in the final, James lost the first match but won the next two to clinch her first senior rainbow jersey to go with the ones she won as a junior.
She told BBC later “It’s unbelievable. I can’t believe this has just happened to me. I’m world champion and I can’t believe it. I didn’t know if it’d run the first run quite right. We went over the tactics right after. I really wanted to win this so I sat down, kept myself calm and thought about what I wanted to do in the next round, did it and did it again in the third.â€
“This is the first time I’ve ever been relaxed when I’m racing. I’ve just been taking it step-by-step and taking each race as it comes. Now I know how to race properly. I didn’t think I’d get a single medal, I was hoping to get top eight in everything. I can’t believe I got a rainbow jersey.”
The day did see other wins but no medals for GB. Jon Dibben fresh out of the Junior ranks won the Scratch race in the Men’s Omnium before finishing 8th overall whilst Laura Trott won the Elimination race in the Women’s Omnium to lift her to third overall after three events. Jason Kenny was knocked out of the Men’s Sprint in the Quarter finals to finish 7th after the minor final.
As a result of the Gold by Becky James, GB is on top of the medal table with four Golds and seven in all.
