Too large a gap to make up and “working their socks off” resulted in the first two groups away to stay clear of the other two groups at the end of the second Springtime Pursuit promoted by the Mid-Devon CC/Colin Lewis Cycles – not that the weather was anything like Spring – temperatures of 3 deg C and a sharp easterly wind blew down the old A30 to the east of Exeter.

The first prime at 9 miles went to Jack Reed, Royal Forest of Dean CC. He had started in the first group however by that time the second group were hot on their heels. The two groups soon linked up and set about hard work.

The third group, who had riders that were well placed 7 days earlier, did not show the same urgency and seemed content to be swallowed up by the scratchmen and then work with them to close down the leaders – this had been their tactics then – this week it did not pay off.

The lap 2 prime went to Kye Martin of the promoting club and the gap from front to rear was 4 minutes 30 seconds. One lap later Duncan Heywood, One & All Cycling, was the prime winner with Reed taking the final prime.

With 10 miles to go it was apparent that the chasers were not going to bridge the gap and it all came down to the final 1 mile climb to the finish line on Straightway Head. Scott Gurnett, Minehead CC, who had won the previous week’s Fourth Category race had opted to move up to the more demanding race once again showed his climbing pedigree with a 9 second gap as he crossed the line ahead of Oliver Pritchard, University of Exeter CC. Harry Edney, North Devon Wheelers , was a further 6 seconds back.

Asked about his training for the hills and his ability to seemingly leave the others behind with such ease said that, “The hill to the finish was not a patch on Porlock”.

There was a reversal of the top two places in the ladies race with Natalie Grinczer, University of Birmingham, getting the better of Ellie Gillham, VC St Raphael/ Waite Contracts, with Ella Hopkins, Breast Cancer Care Academy Team, a frustrated third.

Before 8 miles had been covered the first two groups had merged. The prime winner at 9 miles was Carrie Hill, Mid-Devon CC/Colin Lewis Cycles. One lap later the prime went to Elena Bremer, Exeter Wheelers CC. The third and scratch group bridged the gaps before the third and final prime and it went to Manon Lloyd, Abergavenny RC. No significant breaks were made and as with the other races it was all down to who was the strongest up the final hill and it was Grinczer who proved best.
