Peter ‘the Hulk’ Sagan denied race leader Mark Cavendish the stage win in another wet and windy stage in Italy
It was wet in Italy for the third day in a row for stage 3 of the 48th Tirreno-Adriatico and there was yet another upset when Peter Sagan beat Mark Cavendish for the first time in his career after a drag race to the line.
Video of the Sprint
After rolling out of Indicatore in murky conditions, Garikoitz Bravo (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Cesare Benedetti (NetApp-Endura) and Francesco Failli (Vini Fantini) broke clear of the peloton and opened out a gap that reached eight minutes at its peak.
Bravo was dropped as the route turned hilly around the 100km mark and the remaining escapees were also reeled in by the pack just over 20km from home.
Urán, Juan Antonio Flecha (Vacansoleil-DCM) and Lars Boom (Blanco) all mounted solo attacks, but none of them were able to stay clear of the peloton and were promptly caught in time for the sprinters’ teams to return to the head of the race. From the spray of a peloton at full speed, the incredible hulk, Peter Sagan (Cannondale) emerged to win a hectic sprint, holding off Cavendish who tried to come off his wheel on the right side just metres before the line. Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) was 3rd.
Whilst Cavendish leads, Quickstep also has Michal Kwiatkowski and Niki Terpstra are 2nd and 3rd in the GC, and Kwiatkowski also keeps the Best Young Rider jersey. After the stage, Cavendish was far happier with his teammates than he was the day before. “The guys did a really, really good job today,” Cavendish explained. “They were really motivated. Gert Steegmans brought me up in the last 500 meters.”
“I tried to get on Greipel’s wheel, but Sagan did a really great job between us in the final. Sagan really deserved this win today. I just can’t express enough that my guys did an incredible job today.”
“As for tomorrow, it’s a hard stage for someone like me heading to Prati di Tivo, but we will try and keep the jersey in the team. We definitely have some guys who can fight for the blue jersey for the next days.”
Peter Sagan meanwhile said “I’m happy as its the first time I’ve beaten Mark Cavendish in my career I think. There was a climb we rode hard and I think the sprinters felt it. In the final 500m, Mark had no more lead-out men. I was on Greipel’s wheel, Mark went shoulder to shoulder with me but he was sporting and dropped in behind. It was good for me, anyway, not for him.â€
Jersey for Netapp-Endura
There was good news for the Endura sponsored NetApp team when Cesare Benedetti rode aggressively on the third stage of the Italian stage race Tirreno – Adriatico, claiming the green jersey as the leader in the mountain classification.
Benedetti launched his first attack right when the starting flag dropped, pulling away from the bunch with two other riders. The trio was left alone for all but 6 minutes and was able to approach the day’s only mountain classification after 120 kilometers.
Shortly before the climb, Benedetti attacked from the lead group and was able to decide the mountain classification for himself in a solo ride, taking over as the leader in the mountain classification in this WorldTour race. Another rider joined him after the mountain, and the duo claimed the lead for another 50 kilometers before the bunch caught them 20 kilometers before the finish line.
The sprint stages are now over and the race has a mountain top finish where the GC will see a shake up of the riders at the top of the table.
