Shutt VR call it the Active softshell jacket and in this wet and cold weather, it’s perfect for a day at the races!

On a recent visit to ShuttVR’s headquarters in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside (take your bike and go for a pedal whilst there!), I got myself a Shutt VR Active softshell jacket
I may not be as ‘active’ as many who will find the jacket useful but it keeps me warm and dry in the wet so it is part of the essential kit for overing races now. I wore it at the Peter Young Memorial when it rained dam heavy and can testify that the jacket is waterproof and kept me dry!
Shutt VR tell me that the Jacket was designed for short commutes, can be worn pre and post ride and looks equally good with jeans down the pub which is a very big ask from cycling clothing.
On first look the jacket is a very smart, in black softshell with grey trim but closer inspection reveals it to be highly reflective silver piping. Shutt VR think it makes you visible enough on the bike without screaming road worker.
The fabric has a great feel to it being mid to heavyweight softshell, and Shutt tell us that it is windproof, waterproof and breathable shell bonded to a fleece inner. When worn over a jersey or mid layer it is warm enough down to -5 which it has of course been tested at those temperatures lately!
The end of sleeve cuff are velcro adjustable to keep the end of the sleeves snug.
We were very impressed by the attention to detail and the quality of the construction, but then again that’s what we come to expect from the guys at Shutt. In testing we kept noticing the features…
— The zip (always a bug bear with many peices of clothing) is a sturdy 5mm with a great zip puller that is perfect with or without gloves.
— There are two zipped fleece lined waist pockets which hide the draw cord hem adjusters, a really nice touch as loose cords and saddles don’t mix especially on a commute when you are stop-starting.
— The arms are a cycling cut which we found to be great and the elastic adjuster proved to be just right and again they are glove friendly.
— Inside the jacket there are four useable pockets for wallet, phone, change or tickets etc.
— And they make sizes for all, even one that fits me!
Overall, I found it was difficult to fault the jacket especially as it comes in under £100, plus Shutt Clubroom Members can save 10% by using their clubroom code CLUB2013. Couple that with free UK Postage, its a bargain.
If you need a jacket for on and off the bike, this is a great value one for sure.
