The sun came out and springtime arrived for the We love Mountains road race this morning on the Walkington circuit in East Yorkshire. It is renowned for being a wearing down course and today was no exception.
After the neutralised section it wasn’t long before a group of 5 riders broke away from the peloton to gain a maximum of 35 seconds consisting of two local riders, Karl Downes, Chris Daddy, along with three other riders by lap three 5 other riders had joined them including Julian Gromett, Pete fielding Smith and Paul Dixon. This group was to get to twelve however it was too large to stay away.
As the leading bunch was reeled in on laps 3 they were all together with the odd rider trying to get away.
Then on lap 4 the decisive move came by a lone attack of Duncan Moralee – Strategic Lions sensing the dange, riders started to react and at the top of High Hunsley drag Duncan had been joined by Pete Fielding Smith & Nathan Wilson – Wilson’s Wheels, Alex Dalton & Julian Gromett- Squadra Rt, James Allen Langsetts Cycles. They were to gain a 33 second advantage. this progressed to 1 minute 8 seconds by the start of lap 6.
The remaining bunch were to look at each other to see who was to make the next move, with two strong teams being represented in the break it was hard for any riders to bridge the gap, especially as the wind had started increasing slightly up the drag, the gap then increased to 1 min 55 seconds a lap later.
Only as the bell was rung riders decided to make their moves to avoid a bunch gallop for the 7-15th place for licence points.
It was up to the breakaway riders to finish off the race. On the final lap, it was to be the rider in form Julian Gromett making a break on the final 1km with James Allen close behind him, move maker of the day Duncan Moralee coming in 3rd with up and coming junior Alex Dalton gaining a superb 4th place as he is only 16, followed by The Wilson Wheels duo of Pete Fielding Smith, and Nathan Wilson.
Lee Baldwin – Buxton CC, Chris Daddy and Dan Kenna – Squadra RT realising their teammates were safe jumped off the front of the main bunch. This was to be the order as they went to the line to come in for 7th, 8th and 9th positions.
With Miles Flather – Bridlington CC in 10th, Jacob Trotter – Squadra RT in 11th, Johnny Wilkinson BBM Revolution 12th. Sean Newbould – Featherstone RC 13th, Roy McKinnon – Harworth and District CC, Paul Dixon – VS Cycles Brighouse in 15th.
This was an excellent win by Julian Gromett and placings by his Squadra RT team mates dedicated as a get well soon present for their fellow rider Richard Moore who suffered a bad crash in last weeks race.
It was an grand promotion by Lee Coulson and his band of eager helpers, who sweet talked car drivers, marshalls and anyone else to assist who had a free morning, it was well appreciated by all the riders, on the first day when a lot of car drivers made the most of getting out it the sunshine, to make the main roads busy.
Roll on next year if they can do the same for the weather I’m sure a lot will be back again to race.
