British legend John Tanner has won the Out of the Saddle road race No 2 on the Braithwell course in South Yorkshire

Due to the popularity of the course, it’s location and the excellent organisation skills of the Out of the saddle cycling club, the original plans for one road race had to be reassessed by Steve Ellis the organiser. prompting him to be able to run two full field events on the day.
The field was split with clubs riders from A-G in the first event and H-Z in the second one.
The second event was set off at 7 minutes after the first approximately half the time taken by the organiser to do one lap at full speed.
Event two had a lot of experienced riders now in category two getting together with inform early season riders and up and coming juniors so a good ratio across the board.
The event start with 49 riders taking to the line, the conditions were windy but it was a fine day and luckily no rain forecast. The first lap set off with the odd attacks around the course then on the climb over the motorway from the Quarry John Tanner riding for the new club Strategic Lions attacked with Dominic Smith Retford and District wheelers joining him, they were to work together to establish a gap of 25 seconds by the end of the second lap.
On lap three, seven riders attacked on the climb to break from the main peloton, shortly afterwards they were joined by another group of nine chasing riders, this was to be the decisive split in the race, the gap went out to one minute for the lead two, then all sixteen joined to chase together to fetch the leaders back.
By the end of lap four the time gaps was stretching out to one 1′ 18″ then half a lap later to 1′ 30.
With three strong teams represented in the chasing group of Squadra RT and Langsett Cycles and Peak road club, they gap grew to 1’40. Sensing the danger of the win going away from them, a group of seven worked well on lap 6 to break away from the chasing group, these riders consisted of Nathan Wilson – Wilson Wheels, Julian Gromett & Chris Daddy – Squadra RT, Dave Williams & Micheal Rawson – Kuota-Spinergy-GSG, James Allen Langsett Cycles and Duncan Moralee from Strategic Lions, Duncan of course had his team mate in the lead.
The gaps soon came down to 57 seconds with a lap and a half to go. John Tanner was too experienced to let his hard earned break away for 7 laps not succeed, attacked up the drag with approx 6km to go to drop his companion of most of the race Dominic Smith. You had to feel sorry for Dominic who was left in the wind on his own to struggle and to be caught by the chasing riders to come in further down the field.
John Tanner used his strength, experience and power to stay clear for a gap of 50 seconds on the chasing riders, with the Squadra RT coming in for a well deserved 2nd and 3rd place with Julian Gromett and Chris Daddy followed by Nathan Wilson, Duncan Moralee, Michael Rawson, James Allen and Dave Williams.
These were followed in by Jacob Trotter winning the sprint for the rest of the break away riders representing Squadra RT.
It was an excellent event run by Out of the Saddle with main sponsors The Garden Rooms at Braithwell supplying excellent coffees and scrumptious cakes and allowing the riders to take over their garden centre and car park for the headquarters.
Roll the next event, it’s a small South Yorkshire club, with enthusiasm for the sport, great style and spot on events to enter, you must remember to check out their next event in August.
