Six laps of a 5.8 mile circuit where the fourth cats were set off at the front of the race followed a minute later by the third cats, then a minute later by the second and first cats combined.

Handicaps work well if everyone takes their turn and works to pull the main group back in theory. Tonight, the first bunch soon was depleted and weaker riders being shelled out by the bunch and left to try and hang on to the groups as they passed. By the end of the third lap, the first two groups had come together with two chasing riders jumping clear of the scratch group. The gap came down to 1’30 covering front to back of the race with two laps to go.

Sensing the danger of a rather large a bunch sprint, three riders used their initiative to break clear, John Wolff – Sheffrec, Pete Fielding Smith – Wilson’s Wheels and Chris Thompson VS Cycles, these were to gain a gap of 20 seconds on the chasing group.

On the final lap, Dave Shackleton (Wilson wheels) launched a blistering attack to cross the gap to get to the leaders. The scratch group realising they had missed the decisive move, never managed to bridge to the lead group. Roll on next week, a new course, and a leaders yellow jersey to be defended by John Wolff.
