The result has placed five Team Sky riders in the top five overall, with Puccio heading Bradley Wiggins, Sergio Henao, Dario Cataldo and Rigoberto Uran – all five riders crossing the line together at the finish to stage two.
Cavendish meanwhile lost 48 seconds as his team missed their time trial star Tony Martin to only finish 17th.
While the race puts Wiggins in a good position ahead of his rivals even if its only by a few seconds, the race confirms that Alex Dowsett certainly deserved a ride in a Grand Tour and was an important part of the Movistar team. “”It was tough” says Alex. “I was the only non-climber left when we were down to five riders and I really felt it on the final climb. ”
“I was struggling to hold the wheel and thought I’d blown but SRM was reading 500+ watts! Â The team rode really well together and we’re happy enough with the result which puts Benat in a strong position for the GC”.
