Aussie Hansen triumphs over rivals and conditions to win stage 7 whilst Wiggins loses time after crashing

While it was Aussie, Aussie, Aussie at the front of stage 7 today, there were no celebrations behind as Bradley Wiggins and so many others fell foul to the slippery wet roads. Adam Hansen of Lotto won the stage after a faultless display of power riding not to mention the ability to stay upright when all round him others were laying down their bikes on the wet tarmac. Not by choice of course!

Wiggins was among those who crashed on a wet hairpin on the descent into Pescara. His main rival Niabli did likewise but unlike the Astana rider, Wiggins lost time to a GC group contaiing Nibali, Evans and other GC contenders. Whilst Evans etc arrived 1.07 after a solo Hansen who timed his move from an early break that saw him spend 150k in the lead, behind Wiggins lost a further minute plus on the group of GC contenders.

Sky showed that there is only one team leader by putting all their eggs in Wiggin’s basket by sending Rigoberto Urán and Sergio Henao back to pace Wiggins who was visibly struggling to stay upright, much of it with a TV camera there to record his discomfort. Wiggins now sits 23rd overall, 1:32 back on the maglia rosa. Urán (+1:27) sits one place in front of his team-mate with Henao 25th at +1:44.

Video – Italian Commentary

After the stage Team Principal Dave Brailsford said “Bradley’s fine. There’s no physical injury. Ultimately when you have difficult conditions like these and hard racing, this type of thing can happen. It’s the Giro.”

“You can have good days and bad days and you have to wait until the end to tot them all up and see where you are. It’s a setback, but Brad’s still very much in the hunt. We’ve now got to take each day as it comes, focus on fully recovering tonight and hitting the time trial hard tomorrow. We’ll see where we are tomorrow night and take stock of the situation then.”

Brailsford also elaborated on the decision to send Urán and Henao back to wait for their team leader. “It’s the team’s call,” he added. “They are here to ride for a leader. When you’re dedicated to a single leader, that’s the call that the team made and that’s the right call as far as I’m concerned.”

Drinks at Lotto after win by Hansen

There were very different feelings over at Lotto Belisol where stage winner Adam Hansen was understandably happy. “The feeling to be able to cross the finish line solo is of course very nice. The moment I was alone with Sella, I believed the victory was possible.”

“On the climbs I wanted to put him under pressure and on the penultimate climb I left him behind. The hills weren’t long but very steep. Before that, the cooperation in the group had been very good. Because Sella was the best placed in the GC the peloton kept our lead under control.”

“This morning I knew I wanted to be in the breakaway. This was a stage I had marked, I was very motivated because I thought the escapees could make it to the finish today. Do I now want to win a stage in every Grand Tour? No, that can’t be a goal. In the Giro, there are opportunities for riders like me to try this, but in the Tour we have other goals with André Greipel and Jurgen Van den Broeck. Tonight we’ll definitely have a drink!”

Good day for BMC with two in the top ten including Cadel Evans

BMC Racing Team’s Cadel Evans and Ivan Santaromita successfully navigated their way through a soggy, crash-filled stage Friday at the Giro d’Italia to each climb further up the overall standings on the eve of the race’s first individual time trial.

Evans finished sixth and climbed from 10th to sixth overall, 16 seconds back, while Santaromita is eighth, at 28 seconds. Santaromita, who finished 25th, said like the rest of the BMC Racing Team, he was doing his best to help Evans. “It was a crazy final with slippery roads and it was full gas,” he said. “On the descent, I tried to stay close to Cadel, but it was difficult. Fortunately, we didn’t have any crashes.”

Evans credited his teammates for helping him get through a difficult stage. “It was a real test of our team and our equipment and the guys were really good,” he said. “Daniel Oss was good at the start, monitoring the dangerous breakaways, and Danilo Wyss, Steve Morabito and Steve Cummings were always there to keep me out of trouble.”

“Then Santaromita was there in the final in case something went wrong.” Evans said he does not know what to expect out of Saturday’s 55-km time trial. “It’s a really long and really hard and demanding time trial and we really don’t have a point of reference of how I am time trialing compared to the other guys,” he said. “I will first of all concentrate on doing my best and, of course if I continue to move up on the general classification, that’s optimal.”

Nibali did not expect to crash!

Astana’s “Vincenzo  Nibali said of his day “I didn’t even expect the second crash, but when it is wet and cold I am one of the riders who goes better. Today was a very important finish, but there are still two weeks of racing left to this Giro, and a lot can happen”.
