The superb facility at Marsh Tracks (Rhyl) was the venue for a day of exciting racing with a large entry across the senior groups.

The weather was dark and windy and threatened rain but despite all that it thankfully held off although the wind which gusted into the riders faces on the finishing straight would prove a major factor in all the events with the strong riders coming to the fore and simply riding away with the medals
Race 1 [ Espoirs / Senoirs / Master 1 / Master 2 ]
Chris Sherriffs of Team Leapfrog had obviously not taken in the title of the event, as he jumped away from the gun and time-trialled his way to the title, lapping the field at the 40 minute mark. By that time defending champion Simon West (Team Cyclecene) and Rob Lockhart (Cyclesport International) had set about distancing themselves from the bunch to sweep up the remaining medals .
In the final few laps, Marc Colclough (Rhos on Sea CC) made a last ditch effort for a medal but came up short by a few hundred metres on the line.
Result
1. Chris Sheriffs Team Leapfrog
2. Simon West Team Cyclescene
3. Rob Lockhart Cyclesport International
4. Marc Colclough Rhos on Sea CC

Race 2 [ Groups A/B 40-49 ]
Paul Belfield (Stone wheelers) renowned for his long lone breaks needed no prompting to copy the previous race winner and lost no time in heading off on his own to again lap the field and grab the Champions Jersey.
A three strong chasing group of Jeff Vernon (Birkenhead North End CC) , David Spencer (Wrexham RC/ Fibrax) and Wayne Lacey (Stone Wheelers) finally escaped an attentive bunch at about the 40 minute mark but made little inroads into the winners lead. They did however decide the balance of the A group medals and the b group winner. The bunch was left to sprint out for 5th and the two remaining B group medals.
Result
1. Paul Belfield [A] Stone Wheelers
2. Jeff Vernon [B] Birkenhead North End CC
3. David Spencer[A] Wrexham CC/ Fibrax
4. Wayne Lacey [A] Stone Wheelers
5. Robin Parker [B] East Grinstead CC
6. Steve Cartwright [B] Graham Weigh RT
Race 3 [ Groups C/D 50-59]
Again an early break was to decide the race , but this time it was three riders – Phil Thomas (Liverpool Mercury/Dolan Bikes), Neil Higgins (Graham Weigh RT) and Nick Giles (Wrexham RC / Fibrax) who slipped away not to be seen again.
At the 40 minute mark, a group left the shelter of the bunch, Mark Westwood (Liverpool Century), Onimpex BioRacer duo of Steve Jolley and Steve Davies with Graham Payne of Rob Whitfield RT making it a four man move.
The bunch sprint going to Gary “Burgers†Hinds of the Manx Viking Wheelers/Shoprite squad just ahead of Gordon Wallace of the promoting team who snatched the last of the D group medal.

Race4 [ Groups E/F/G/H 60+ and Ladies/ Ladies Vets ]
A five man break decided the final race of the day with defending Champion Alan Forrester (Rhyl CC) being joined by Alan Kemp (Weaver Valley CC), Malcolm Fraser (Team Lusso), Dave Pollard (Port Sunlight Wheelers) and TLi Regional Secretary Nigel Harrop (Seamons CC) finishing in that order.
Ruth Taylor (Biketreks RT) grabbed the Ladies Title from Vicky Thomas (Liverpool Mercury /Dolan Bikes) who had to settle for the Vets Ladies title. The F/G/H amalgamated jersey was went deservedly to Multi National title winner Pete Matthews (Liverpool Mercury / Dolan Bikes) inches ahead of Dave Whybrow (Southend Wheelers) who was rewarded for his long trip with a silver medal .
Marsh Tracks is probably amongst the best closed circuits in the country with its grippy, wide surface and slightly exposed positioning making for great racing. A big vote of thanks must go to the adminstrative committee who maintain the facility .
