The rain clouds stayed away for a lovely warm evening of racing around the quiet village of Appleton Roebuck near Tadcaster in North Yorkshire.
The race was split into four even groups for six laps of the small twisting circuit. Notable riders in the scratch race were current leader Dave Shackleton backed by his team mates, Nathan Wilson and Pete Fielding Smith. Wheelbase riders Adam Duggleby and Tom Barras, Ashley Brown from Team Sportscover Bioracer and Kit Gilham Metaltek and Chevin cycles own Giles Pidcock.
As soon as the scratch group left the headquarters, they were determined to make up the 3.30 handicap of the fourth cat riders in the lead. Led by Adam Duggleby, the pace was set high with good team work coming from Tom Barras and attacking riding by Kit Gilham. Within the first lap, the third bunch were caught and by the end of the second lap the second group were well in their sights.
It was wonderful to see sixty riders strung out in a line across the North Yorkshire roads. Once the catch was made, Adam carried on for the prime win followed by Peter Barusevicus and Dave Shackleton. This group worked well together until Ashley Brown and Adam Duggleby decided to break away off the front of the bunch.
On the final lap, the leaders had a twenty second advantage over the leading bunch with the third group catching the leading group on the line making it an interesting task for the judges to finish for the minor placings. Adam took the win from Ashley followed by Nathan Wilson, Tom Barras and Giles Pidcock.
Dave Shackleton takes the leaders jersey into the final week. Despite all the efforts to stop the race by a local farmer using his tractor to part block the road, his dog walking skills and his transit van it didn’t deter the riders who politely wished him a good evening as they passed.
It certainly bought a mini Tour de France to the villagers and showed the village what a good racing can be seen locally. Chevin Cycles brought great organisation along with Dirtwheels racing teams driving of vehicles. Fantastic team work by all the officials and traffic management made a superb evening of racing in North Yorkshire.
The final event is at Kirby Hill circuit in Boroughbridge next week.
