Rapha Condor JLT’s Kristian House put in a spirited performance as the Tour Series resumed in Reddich last night, taking 4th place and keeping his hopes of winning the IG Markets sprint jersey alive.

On the tough course, House took the first of the three intermediate sprints before moving clear of the bunch with four others for company. The leading quintet contained riders from all the top teams in the series, and as such the chase in the bunch behind soon dwindled. As the gap rapidly increased it became apparent that the winner would come from the move, and it was eventually Tom Scully of team Raleigh who pulled clear.

House commented afterward, “I was sprinting pretty hard against Scully for the points and I saw we were dropping the rest of the break every time, so the last time through the sprint I made sure we kept it going. Somehow the break came back to us though, and just as they did, he went again, and that was the last we saw of him.”

“He was really strong, and he went at a good time because we were just about to lap the bunch. He got round the bunch on his own and then by the time we were passed he was long gone. It was frustrating that I missed it, but there was little else I could do.”

The race for the team prize was thrown into confusion as the leaders lapped the peloton for the first time in the series, and the rule that states that all lapped riders have to sprint with three laps to go came into effect.

However, many riders were caught out and waited until the final lap to sprint. In the confusion, Rapha Condor JLT ended the night in 6th place, conserving their spot in 4th overall in the team rankings.

The highlights of the race will be shown tonight on ITV4 at 10pm.
