A big day for the riders, parents and supporters of youth track cycle racing at Manchester saw 123 riders on the start of a journey to qualify for the 2013 National Omnium Final.

40+volunteers some at their first event and others definitely not at their first event, indeed veterans of track race meetings nationally and internationally set the scene at a venue famous for developing the UKs recent talent. Volunteers briefed, riders program agreed and the scene was definitely set for a super day.
The plan was 500 metre time trial for under 12s, kilos for under 14s\16s followed by bunch races for each category (devil, scratch, keirin, points). Time was tight on the very busy velodrome and we never quite got to the points race and with full agreement with those who must be obeyed (commissaires) it was dropped from the program.
First up was the time trial and the ding dong of the under 12s began…restricted gears, desperately spinning legs showed some great times with the battle between Anna Armstrong (Border City Wheelers CC) and Joshua Scales (Derby Mercury RC) starting as they meant to continue with 1st place going to Anna with a 43sec 500 metre time trial followed in second place by Joshua a couple of seconds behind. The velodrome’s 4 station timing system meant that riders were placed accurately with only 10ths of seconds between them.
17 under 14 girls started our event which is a great achievement for all in cycling. Female racing is sometimes felt to be the less well supported but it wasn’t the support act today! There was a battle royal between Eleanor Davies (Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man) and Samantha Verrill (Stockton Wheelers) neither rider placing outside of the top 3 in all of the omnium events and the result wouldn’t be decided until the final event……Fastest kilo time was Felicity Gledhill (Planet X) with a time of 1min 25secs.
Under 14 boys show 35 boys sign on with 20 riders from the supporting club Eastland’s/Sportcity Velo (over 50 riders represented the host club Eastlands/Sportcity continuing the Jason Kenny/Steven Burke/Simon Yates production line). William Turnbull showed his hand early by producing the fastest kilo time at 1min 15 which is some achievement on standard under 14 bike and gearing.
Under 16 Girls
Next up was the Under 16 girls event, Grace Garner (RST) was unstoppable producing a 1min 13sec kilo time much to the delight of the crowd.
Final kilos were for the under 16 boys, and as Grace was for the girls, Tom Rotherham was in impressive form and started his winning streak with 1min 9sec kilo (Sportcity Velo), Jack Payne (Sportcity Velo) also did a great ride, finishing just 2 hundredths of a second behind Tom. Interestingly a power cut at the velodrome didn’t slow the under 16 riders down, just provided a challenge for the volunteers! The power cut did show the volunteer team working at its finest to get the racing back on though.
Next event for the customers was a devil takes the hindmost (1 rider eliminated per lap until final 3 sprint for the line). Oh what fun we had! 14 laps is a long way for an under 12……Joshua Scales managed to take the win from Anna Armstrong this time……Poppy Wildman (Nottingham Clarion) was 3rd over the line.
Under 14 girls Devil win taken by Eleanor Davies (Team Royal London 360 Isle Of Man), Katie Helsby (Eastland’s Velo) took 2nd place.
Under 14 Boys
For the Under 14 boys the devil and the scratch race were split into 2 equal groups to conform to the Manchester track limit and safety regulations regarding new riders. For all races it proved to produce good racing as top 3 prices were awarded for both groups (prizes provided by Shepherds Cycles, Heywood and Paul Hewitt Cycles of Leyland). In the under 14s first place was Jamie Ridehalgh (Airedale Chemical RT) from Brad Dransfield (North Midlands Youth Squad).
Under 16 Girls Devil The race was observed to be very tactical however no-one was able to counter the Grace Garner (RST) sprint taking the win sprinting from the back of the group on the final lap.
As per the U14 boys the under 16 boys were split across 2 groups with the same rules for prizes. Tom Rotherham (Sportcity Velo) appeared to control the race before taking the win with Tom England (Bush Healthcare CRT) following his wheel for 2nd. Tom who had travelled to be with us from near Geneva clearly has great experience in track racing and his keen eye for positioning showed in all of the bunch races.
Next up were scratch races, a pattern was forming the top 5 in each category were generally the same riders who were fighting amongst themselves for points with other riders picking up the scraps. Experienced track racing knowledge was evident across the local velodrome riders and also the quality of riding was exceptional. A point of note in the under 12 scratch race Hannah Wiggins suffered a fall and with a suspect neck injury the ambulance was called (The British Red Cross Team did a wonderful job arranging care in the first instance). I have since heard from Hannah’s parents that she is expected to make a full recovery and they would like to pass their thanks to all at the omnium for their kind words.
Finale
Final event of the day was the keirin, first time behind the motorbike for some of the riders and also time the first time for some the parents acting as holders. A learning experience for all! Youth C, Youth B girls and Youth B boys overall omnium standings were to be decided on this race which made for some impressive sprinting, Jeff Winstanley rode the green derny motorbike (seat far too low Jeff!) and the racing started first with the under 12s finishing with the ferocity of the Under 16s…Interestingly the winner of each keirin became the overall winner of their age category Omnium.
A huge thank you to all our volunteers, officials, riders and parents. I hope you enjoyed it as I certainly did as organiser and stand in commentator! We planned to put a really fantastic event on with all the thrills of the velodrome and I hope that’s what we did! Big screens, top racing, nice people, projectors, electronic timing, starting pistols, no rain. A good day….
