Julia Shaw & Matt Bottrill cap a great day for Drag2Zero in the RTTC 50 mile time trial Championships on Sunday

Bottrill Takes Men’s National 50 title

Recovering from his efforts in the British National time trial championships, some three days earlier, Bottrill was back racing in the Men’s National 50 mile championships, held in Llanarth, near Abergavenny, South Wales. Riders completed 2 laps of an out and back circuit and with high winds and rain, it would be a true test for all those taking part!

The event got underway at 8am, with 120 riders spread over 2hrs of racing. First rider to get a high standard time was James Gilfillan, Velorefined Aerosmith’s, the former international rider, who’s cycling Cv includes riding the under 23 world time trial, clocked a very rapid 1:45:48 to put him in the lead.

At the halfway point, Gilfillan was just seconds ahead of Mark Holton www.drag2zero.com, but Holton finished strong and timed his effort to perfection clocking 1:44:18. Then just 5 minutes later, another drag2zero rider Jeff Jones, did a rapid 1:43:42.

It was looking like a clean sweep for the drag2zero team with just Bottrill to finish! At the halfway point, Bottrill had been the quickest in a time of 50.52, but after his efforts from Thursday, could Bottrill clinch the lead?

The answer was yes in a new personal best time of 1:41:10, for a convincing victory and his second individual medal of the the week. It was a great day out for the team as they also managed to set a new championship team record!!

Asked about the ride, Bottrill replied, “I’m made up. Its been the best week of my cycling career. Winning this tops of an amazing National campaign. Second in the National 10 & 25 and the British Championship time trial, gold in the 50 and two team medals in the 25 & 50. I’m made up!”

“Todays ride went well. I had Peter Lavine and my brother, Mark Bottrill, here on hand to help giving time checks and making sure I was well looked after. I felt good out there. My legs were fine but my shoulder started giving way around the 40 mile mark. Its still quite sore and swollen from my crash last week. But I’m looking forward to having a few days rest and then I can think about the rest of the year. The next target for the team will be the team time trial in two weeks time.”
