Simon Gerrans: a first for an Australian team

The Orica-GreenEdge team had an influence on the race in stage three that will put a smile on the faces of all involved. The two Simons – first Clarke, then Gerrans – made sure the jersey of the Australian team was seen throughout the race and on the podium as winners.

Simon Clarke was voted the winner of the ‘Fighting Spirit’ award, a consolation for a bold effort to try and steal the polka-dot jersey. And it was Simon Gerrans who finished off an outstanding day for the first Aussie team to contest the Tour de France.

After all the attacking riders were reeled in with 3km to go, it was up to South Africa’s Daryl Impey to deliver Gerrans as close as possible to the finish before peeling off and watching him sprint. It was a drag race between last year’s green jersey winner – the runner-up in stage two of the 100th Tour – Peter Sagan… and the Australian won! It is his second victory in a stage of the Tour de France (his first was in 2008). Sagan might have finished second but he inherited the lead in the points classification.

RadioShack-Leopard was also rewarded for the work it did at the front of the peloton for most of the day: it supported Jan Bakelants and his quest to keep the yellow jersey for another day. The Belgian finished 19th in the stage but keeps the yellow jersey.

Mark Cavendish: “Today I felt a little bit better than yesterday,” Cavendish said. “Unfortunately last week I had to take antibiotics until this Sunday, due to bronchitis. Now I’m better, even if not 100 percent. We will see day-by-day.” Photo: ASO/B.Bade.

The progress report
The 145.5km third stage of the 100th Tour de France, from Ajaccio to Calvi, began at 12.52pm with 198 riders at the sign on. The sun was shining and the temperature was 27 degrees Celsius for this final stage on the island of Corsica before the Tour returns to mainland France. The itinerary included four climbs: the cat-4 col de San Bastiano (at 12km), cat-3 col de San Martino (at 58km), cat-3 côte de Porto (75km) and the cat-2 col de Marsolino (132km). The intermediate sprint was in Sagone at the 28.5km mark.

Five escape early…
Westra (VCD) attacked as soon as the stage began, he was joined by Gautier (EUC), Minard (ALM), Clarke (OGE) and Vuillermoz (SOJ) at 3km and there was no reaction to the attack by the peloton. The best of these five escapees on GC was Gautier; both he and Vuillermoz started the stage only 1” behind the yellow jersey. At 10km, Kashechkin (AST) was the first to abandon the 2013 Tour.

Clarke sprinted for the line of the first climb and just held off Vuillermoz to claim one point. The maximum gain of the break was 4’25” (at 17km). Minard was first over the intermediate sprint line while Kittel led the sprint specialists over the line in Sagone, 3’20” behind the escape. The average speed for the first hour was 39.8km/h.

Clarke collects climbing points
The winner of the polka-dot jersey at last year’s Vuelta led over both the first climbs, beating Vuillermoz in the sprint both times. On the second climb, Saxo-Tinkoff put four riders at the front before the passage through the Callaques de Piana; this prompted a reaction from teams like BMC, Sky and Belkin. With 75km to go, the advantage of the escapees was just 50”. Bagot (COF) abandoned the Tour at the halfway mark of the stage. Clarke led Vuillermoz over the third climb to collect another two point; the peloton was behind by 35” but then the escapees lifted the tempo and, with 65km to go, they were 1’10” ahead. The average speed for the 2nd hour was 36.2km/h.

Setting up the finish
With 21.5km to go, Clarke attacked the lead group. Minard followed but the other escapees didn’t react. He faught hard to stay ahead for the climbing points but behind him Rolland (EUC) was on the attack. So too were Nieve (EUS), Nordhaug (BEL) and Chavanel (OPQ)… Rolland spoiled Clarke’s quest for the polka-dot jersey and the Frenchman led over the final climb. The Australian was caught 14km from the finish.

Rolland found himself on his own in the lead until being joined by Nordhaug, Chavanel and Nieve with 8km to go. The peloton was led by Orica and Cannondale riders and was just 10” behind with 5km to go. The peloton was all together 3km from the finish and, from there it was Orica-GreenEdge and Cannondale at the front.

Simon Gerrans give Orica-GreenEdge it’s first stage win!
With 2.2km to go, Dumoulin (ARG) attacked the peloton but he was caught with about 800m to go and then the Cannondale and Orica-GreenEdge teams dominated the head of the bunch. In what seemed to be a stage designed for Sagan, he failed to contend with Simon Gerrans who also thrives on tough terrain and has an impressive sprint.

The Australian won a stage of the Volta a Catalunya earlier this year in a sprint and he repeated that effort today in the Tour de France. It is his second stage victory in the Tour – after his triumph at Prato Nevosa in 2008 – and the first victory for an Australian team in this race.

Jan Bakelants finished 19th in the stage and he will keep his yellow jersey for stage four.

Second again for Sagan in Green

For the second successive day Peter Sagan has been the runner-up in the race for stage honours and hopes the effects of injuries sustained in a crash on day one of the 2013 wear off and that he gets back to top form. “I want to wear the green jersey all the way to Paris and I’m happy to be in the lead of this category again. If you want to know about the sprint, you’ll have to ask the winner… not me. I was just second.

“I did my sprint but I didn’t feel very good after the crash in the first stage. But I’m happy to have the green jersey and I hope that, day-by-day, I feel better because I need to recover after the crash. I’m happy to earn points which I also did today but we will see how we can manage in the days to come, especially in the sprints but I hope that the first crash is the only one I have and that I don’t crash anymore.”

A Huge Win says Gerrans afterwards

2013_Stage3_TourdeFrance_Gerrans

This is a huge win,” said Gerrans. “It’s a huge moment for the team. We have been so close on so many occasions. Hopefully it’s the first of many more to come.”

“This is obviously our biggest win,” added Sport Director Matt White. “We’ve won more than 50 races since the team’s inception last year. We had already won at the Giro, the Vuelta, the Classics and all sorts of races between, but this is the one box we hadn’t ticked off yet.”

The Australian outfit made their mark on the undulating stage from start to finish. Simon Clarke spent the day in a five rider breakaway that formed shortly after the flag waved, indicating the official start of stage three. Joined up the road by Sébastien Minard (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Alexis Vuillermoz (Sojasun), Cyril Gautier (Europcar) and Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil-DCM), Clarke chased mountain points as he worked with his breakaway companions to establish an advantage over the cagey peloton.

“My job today was basically exactly what I did,” explained Clarke. “I was brought to the Tour de France team to go into breakaways, and I made sure that happened. It took pressure off the team behind so they could relax a little bit before the finish.”

Clarke earned top points on three of the four categorised climbs. In an effort to trade the blue polka dot jersey he earned as KOM leader at the Vuelta a España last year for the red polka dot jersey worn by the Tour de France KOM leader, Clarke distanced his breakmates on the final climb of the Col de Marsolino. Swept up by riders attacking out of the bunch ahead of the summit, he missed out on the polka dot jersey but was awarded most combative for his efforts.

“I went for the KOM points because I could,” said Clarke. “The opportunity was there so I took it. It would have been a bonus to get the jersey, but it wasn’t a primary objective. I attacked in the final because I wanted to get over the last climb with the bunch. I knew the gap to the break wasn’t big enough to stay away, and I didn’t want to get caught much before the summit. If I had, I might not have been with the group in the closing kilometres to lend a hand.”

Pierre Rolland (Europcar) soloed over the Col de Marsolino summit trailed by Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel-Euskadi). The duo were joined by Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma-Quick-Step) and Lars Petter Nordhaug (Belkin) on the twisty descent. Clarke joined Cameron Meyer and Michael Albasini at the head of affairs, and the three combined forces to catch the four up the road 3km from the finish.

“Cam Meyer went straight to the front to shut down the four riders who had slipped off the front,” said Gerrans. “Albasini and Clarke were there, too. Those three committed everything to bring that break back for me, and we kept Daryl for the final lead-out. The rest of the team had done their jobs early – looking after us over the early hills and getting bidons. It was a total team effort. I’m really proud how everyone contributed.”

First to the front, Meyer was the first to complete his chase work. Albasini pulled off shortly after making the catch. Clarke took Impey and Gerrans to the 2km mark.
“Daryl and I have been working well together in the finals in the last few days,” said Gerrans. “Yesterday I led him out. We thought the finish suited me better today, and we made the decision to have him lead me out because of that. He’s the best in the business. He did an absolutely perfect job.”

Cannondale opened the sprint with Impey and Gerrans just behind. Impey spotted a narrow opening on the right side of the finishing straight and slipped through it with Gerrans in tow. Gerrans swung off Impey’s wheel 200m from the finish and charged towards the line. Sagan did the same on the left side of the road. A photo finish determined Gerrans the winner by millimetres.

“I had no idea if I had won,” said Gerrans. “I knew it was really close, and I wasn’t going to celebrate too early. Sagan and I were on the opposite ends of the road and we both threw our bikes. My win was confirmed a few minutes later. We’re all pretty ecstatic.”
