How do you describe a race promoted by York Cycleworks in a few words. Well, with the Hambleton Hills scenery, sunshine, rolling roads, idyllic villages, all traffic managed and superb coffee and cake to finish in a word an ‘Excellent promotion’.
Forty riders took to the start line at Brandsby village hall with glorious sunshine all the way. It was a hard race with rolling roads, technical villages to travel through and a killer one in seven climb to finish it off.
At the end of the first lap of four two riders Luke Preston (Airedale Olympic) and Richard Siddle (Crosstrax) were out of the bunch and establishing a nice gap of 20 seconds this would go out to 40, however with long straights the bunch could keep these two in sight.
As the bell was rung, the bunch started to kind regards together to fetch the gap down. As we entered the village at Brandsby the gap was down to ten seconds. It was all going to come back together on the climb.
This resulted in a climbers finish with the victory going to up and coming junior Julian Varley (Harrogate Nova), who had the misfortune of sliding off his bike and crashing two days earlier – what a difference a couple of days make.
Runner up position was Clifton CC rider Cameron Brooks from Adam Birdsall Batley CC. If there had been a team award it would surely have gone to Clifton CC who had four riders in the top ten. Great riding by all who took part.
It was a fantastic race with an interesting route for the riders, well marshalled and traffic controlled, hats off to Andy Frazer and his team at York Cycleworks. Certainly worth all riders making a note of their events for next year, well worth entering. They even supply a stunning sunset for a back drop to the finish………Magic!
