Mike Northey won the Elite Circuit race in Abergavenny on Friday night a photo finish with Niklas Gustavsson (UK Youth)

After an attacking start with no one team able to dominate the race, the peloton split in two and from that selection, Node 4’s Kiwi, Mike Northey and Raleigh’s Mark Christian jumped clear. With a small but constant lead, the chase behind them took its toll with many riders abandoning including Ed Clancy who was so strong in Stockton the week before.

After some great work from his teammate Yanto Barker to help bring the gap down, Niklas Gustavsson (UK Youth) bridged to the leaders with only a few laps to go, making the junction on the final lap. With Christian gassed from the effort on that final lap, the sprint for the win was between Northey and Gustavsson with the Node 4 rider getting the verdict.

Behind the rush was on with last year’s series winner Graham Briggs (Raleigh) getting the verdict being chased down all the time by Dean Downing (Madison Genesis) in 5th and Tom Murray 6th.

Mike Northey said of his race, “It was a bit of luck. Niklas was going quicker than me but I managed to get a little bit more momentum but it was tight coming into that last area. I was pretty lucky there, just scrapped through.”

“I was just trying to ride to the pace of the bunch during the race but Niklas came across very quick and once he got there, I knew it would be down to the sprint.  was just chasing him in those last yards and just managed to get past him.”

Gustavsson meanwhile said: “I was saving everything for the last corner. I was going really deep but I kept going. I could not see the finish line and just went for it but Mike was stronger.”
