Julie Rodman report…
As the sun went down over the local York race course, the racing got hotter around the York sport circuit. Twenty five riders started the men’s race and it went straight from the whistle with all riders strung out over the back straight in one long line on the first lap.
This race was never going to settle with attacks from the word go! First to try to get away was Pete Baracevicus (Dirtwheels) with Richard Baldwin (Bikebox) right on his wheel. This came back and then it was the turn of Duncan Moralee (Strategic Lions) to lift the pace. Ashley Marshall (Airevalley cycles) was the next attacker with Will Brown (Velo 29) in hot pursuit.
These two worked well on the front for a couple of laps. Next to go was Dave Shackleton (Wilson’s Wheels) only to be brought back. The pace took its toll and soon riders were being distanced from the main group.
Lap number 12 of the race saw the decisive move with Will Brown teaming up with Adam Duggleby (Wheelbase) and these were to work in tandem around the course. Sensing the danger, other riders tried to get them back which culminated in three groups on the track. A group of six riders were in pursuit of the leaders however the gap went out to 17 seconds as the duo were working well together.
At half distance, Lewis Meadows (Cottingham Coureurs) showing his grass track endurance, made the leap to the chasing group followed shortly afterwards by Giles Pidcock (Chevin cycles). This was to be the group to work together to the finish with a small group of six at the rear of the race.
Adam and Will certainly made a race of it with Dave Shackleton jumping clear to try and get to them with three laps to go. Local sprinter Pete Barusevicus was to join him a lap later.
It all came down to the sprint finish with Adam using his track sprinting to good use for the win from Will followed shortly afterwards by Pete taking third place from Dave Shackleton. Shaun Nicholson Black Hawk taking the bunch sprint from Giles Pidcock.
Only bad point of the evening was Richard Baldwin who had followed the moves all evening, taking a tumble on the hairpin section due to a rolled tub. We wish him a speedy recovery.
It was fast and furious racing and everyone enjoyed themselves even though the elites made their legs hurt.
