Derny Fest
The first heat saw Martyn Harris (Banjo Cycles) take an early lead off the front, with Glen O’Brien (CC Luton) the first to make a challenge to Harris. The group remained united until seven laps to go, with Ian Greenstreet (Newbury RC), Harris and Nick Cammell (GS Henley) taking the front three spots. Harris broke away from the group with four laps to go and caused the group to fragment. Harris won the heat, with Nigel Steven (Finchley RT) and O’Brien finishing in second and third place.

Alex Wise

The second heat saw Kristian Woolf (Prestige Velo Club) emulate the move of Harris in the previous heat and took the lead from the start. Woolf was unable to sustain a convincing lead, giving Alex Wise (VC St Raphael) the opportunity to lead the race. With ten laps to go, Wise increased his lead further and sustained it until the finish. Woolf took the second place, with Oliver Hitchings (Peter Hansford Racing) taking the final qualifying spot for the major final.

Frazier Carr (awcycles.co.uk) took the lead from the start in the third heat. However, with 15 laps to go, James Connell (Brixton Cycles) made the move to the front with teammate Vojtech Blazejovsky (Brixton Cycles). Both riders were able to hold onto their positions at the front of the race, with Blazejovsky eventually taking the win, followed by Connell and Joshua Mitchell (Bicester Millenium).

In the Minor 15k Final, Sarah Brook (Team Mulebar Girl Sigma Sport) stamped her authority and took an early lead in the race, with Hugh Knudsen (Dream Race Club) and Malcolm Freeman (High Wycombe CC) in pursuit. The race remained close until 22 laps to go, when eventual winner Gavin Mitchell (Twickenham CC) took the chance to start a break from the field and slowly quickly increased his lead to 20m.

However, he was only able to hold the lead for five laps, and the group soon became united. Freeman made a very determined effort to get to the front of the group with nine laps to go, but was unable to hold off the challenge from with David Carter (Bournemouth Arrow) who stole the lead in the closing laps. However, it took until two laps to go before Mitchell made his winning move. He was able to stretch his lead in the final lap to cross the line with a clear 20 meter margin over Freeman and Brook.

The Minor 20K final saw David Jack (BC Private Member) putting in an exceptional effort from the gun and making a determined effort to stay way from the field. Jack impressive managed to hold a convincing lead until 20 laps to go. Here, he briefly lost touch with his derny which enabled the bunch to make the first inroads into his lead.
Jack’s determination was initially enough to hold off the advancing bunch, although with the group eating around five metres a lap into Jack’s lead, it became clear the group would soon catch him. Greenstreet and Trevor Bradbury (awcycles.co.uk) lead the charge back to Jack and, with ten laps to go, just five riders remained in the lead group. With just three laps remaining, John Hefferman (New Forest CC), Bradbury, Greenstreet and Carr made their move to break away from the field. A strong final lap by Bradbury saw him take the win, closely followed by Greenstreet and Carr in third.

THE FINAL
The Derny Fest Final featured the first three riders from each heat and promised to be an exciting race. After the gun sounded, Glen O’Brien (CC Luton) made the early break, although Alex Wise (VC St Raphael) immediately chased him down. Buoyed by the catch, Wise and Kristian Woolf (Prestige Velo Club) took the opportunity to break from the rest of the field.

The only rider to attempt to stay with the pair was Martyn Harris (Banjo Cycles), but he was unable to match their early speed. Vojtech Blazejovsky (Brixton Cycles) made a lone break to catch the leaders, and managed to stay in this position for the rest of the race. With Harris and Oliver Hitchings (Peter Hansford Racing) staying together in fourth and fifth place from this point onwards, the final positions were already decided with 20 laps to go.

Although Blazejovsky made some inroads into Wise and Woolf’s lead in the closing, Wise’s impressive final burst of speed was enough to put an impressive distance between himself and Woolf in the final straight and enabled him to take the win comfortably. Blazejovsky earned a well deserved third, with Harris and Hitchings taking fourth and fifth respectively.

National Women’s Omnium League
The women’s omnium competition was well attended, with no fewer than 22 women signing on.

The first event of the day was the 500m time trial which, given the unusual distance of Palmer Park, saw riders having to ride one complete lap plus an extra 41 metres. Two riders managed to break 40 seconds: Jan Birkmyre (Champion Systems Maxgear-Base) rode an impressive 38.90s to take first place, with Lydia Boylan (BC Private Member) clocking 39.70s for second. Anna Railton (Team ASL360) managed 40.32s for third Рjust one hundreth of a second ahead of fourth placed Charlotte Broughton (MG D̩cor).

The points race was one of the highlights of the competition, and became an exciting battle from the gun. The first set of points were contested in a sprint with Birkmyre, Sophie Black (Manx Viking Whls CC) and Abbie Dentus (De Ver Cycles) taking first, second and third respectably. After this first set of points, Railton took the chance to make a break. Sadly, with Brit Tate (GTBCycles.co.uk) in hot pursuit, she was unable to hold her break until the next points lap and the group became united once more.

Omnium Podium

The next set of points became another closely fought competition with Keira McVitty (Brixton CC) taking the honours this time. Team mate Sarah Connell then took the same strategy of Railton, and took advantage of the temporarily fatigued riders to make break off the front. She impressively gained a third of a lap within two laps, with the group making no determined effort to get back to her.

By the time the bell sounded, Connell was near to half a lap ahead of the bunch and winning the next points battle became elementary. Janet Birkmyre took the sprint from an impressive distance to take the first of the minor points in the bunch sprint, with Lydia Boylan and Abbie Dentus fighting it out for second and third. Railton and Laura Cheeseman (Prestige VC) formed a chase to catch the leading Connell for the next set of points, but Connell had managed to build such an impressive lead to she was able to hold on take maximum points in the following lap.

Black made a chase from behind to take the points for second. The race for the points in the final lap saw Birkmyre take the sprint from an impressive 250m from the line. Her efforts were rewarded with maximum points in the final lap and provided her with the points needed to win the race overall. Connell’s assertive riding in the middle of the race earned her second place, with McVitty taking third.

Birkmyre’s sprinting prowess is well known, and she was able to take the win in the next event, the 500m sprint. Boylan put in an impressive ride to take second place, with Black finishing third.

The next event, the 2000m Individual Pursuit, saw just one rider break the 2:30 barrier. Broughton, who last year podiumed in the pursuit in the BC Inter Regional Track Championships, won the event with a very impressive time of 2:28.20. Boylan’s fast ride of 2:30.52 was enough for second place, with Birkmyre riding 2:32.22 for third.

The 8km scratch race may have been the final event of the day, but there was certainly no sign of fatigue amongst the riders. McVitty was the first to try and make a break with ten laps to go and was soon joined by the young Isabelle Clarke (Lichfield City CC). Sadly, the pair were unable to consolidate their lead and were soon caught by the bunch.

Birkmyre made a further move with eight laps to go, but it was Tate who was the only rider who was able to put a convincing distance between herself and the rest of the group and, with five laps to go, had put a gap of 50 metres between herself and the rest of the field. However, a dual effort by Connell and Laura Massey (Abergavenny RC) in the penultimate lap was enough to catch Tate. The closing sprint saw Connell take the win, just a wheel ahead of Massey. Tate’s gutsy riding was rewarded with third.

Birkmyre’s excellent performance throughout the competition saw her win the overall event convincingly, with Railton taking second place and Boylan earning the final podium spot. The overall level of competition was extremely high and, with young riders Broughton, Dentus and Black taking fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, the results are surely indicative of stunning future talent.
