There was a 1-2 for Raleigh on Wednesday night as Graham Briggs won his local Doncaster Wheelers Summer Road Race with Tom Stewart second

ON a humid night in South Yorkshire, 27 riders lined up to start the Doncaster Wheelers Summer RR. With many top Elite riders missing due to The Hitters GP, Team Raleigh seemed to be a sure thing as they took the start with five riders. With only two laps covered, Raleigh hit the front and as they crossed the Start/Finish line, Graham Briggs and Tom Stewart shot out of the bunch followed closely by Tom Murray of Metaltek KOO.
For eight laps, the three riders built up a steady lead over the bunch and as the rain started to come down. Graham Briggs struck out on his own with eleven laps still remaining. Looking like a man with something to prove, he set about making sure no-one could get back to him.
His lead soon grew from 11 seconds to almost 1 minute 30 seconds to Tom Stewart and Tom Murray and the bunch over three minutes down. The race was in status quo until two riders (Ali Rutherford (Wheelbase Altura) and Dave Shackleton (Wilson Wheels) made a great attempt to bridge to the two riders up the road. Sadly, this wasn’t to be and they got to within nine tantalising seconds but no closer.
On the last lap, Graham Briggs made it to the back of the bunch on the start/finish straight. Being the consummate pro, he chose to stay behind the bunch in space to take the applause of the very large crowd waiting in the fast fading light to see him win. A well-earned win on a dark and wet night.
