Julie Rodman writes… We had a wonderful start to the Bank Holiday week with Dirtwheels Road Club staging their first event at the York Sport circuit. With the sun setting over the Heslington complex and Virgin hot air balloons watching over, the crowd that had gathered to watch certainly weren’t disappointed with the evening and very impressed with the quality of racing.

The first race was a 3/4th cat event including two GB Cycles ladies Iona Sewell and Brit Tate, who certainly held their own in with the men taking turns at the front & Brit going on to grab a top ten placing.

The first attacks came from Neil Harris (University of York CC), Richard Sharp (Clifton CC) and Craig Armitage (Cross Trax). With Team Swift having four riders in the race as well it certainly made it an interesting attacking first five laps. With a couple of primes to break up the action, everyone was jumping around.

On lap six down the back straight, Jacob Brown (Team Swift) attacked taking Richard Sharp with him and they built up a lead and Richard took the first prime. The lead continued to climb to twenty seconds with Jacob Brown taking the second prime. Neil Harris attacked again taking Toby Holmes with him but this was to be brought back.

It was going down to the last lap with the two breakaway riders sprinting for the line with Richard Sharp taking the win from Jacob Brown. The bunch sprint was then won by an elated Craig Armitage (Crosstrax) followed by Stewart Gormley (Team Swift) from Toby Holmes. Brit Tate was a very credible 8th place for the First Lady. It was good to hear so many riders saying they were enjoying criterium racing again in a safe environment.

With a lot of riders aiming to finish on a win and others aiming to keep their category licences or move up a level, it made for attacking racing. The first move went at the first prime with Pete Barecevicus (Dirtwheels) taking the spoils and he was joined by his team mate Matt Bulmer.

These two worked in tandem for the duration of the race establishing a lead of 22 seconds at one point. Matt took the prime for the second sprint. As the race came to the final laps, the lights came into their own and we had our very own nocturne criterium.
