Katusha finished first and third with Daniel Moreno winning the stage up the wall at Valdepeñas de Jaén and with it, the leader’s jersey

There was another fine win for Daniel Moreno in the 68th edition of “Vuelta a Espanaâ€. After two second places, on stages 2 and 8, and then the triumph on stage 4, Katusha’s Spanish rider incredibly encored all that on the ninth stage, 163 km from Antequera to Valdepenas.

The stage finished on a ‘wall’ of a climb where the gradient in parts was 24%. As soon as the climb started, Daniel Moreno attacked and nobody could follow him. The Spanish winner was followed by two more from Spain, Valverde of Movistar in second at four seconds and then another rider from Katusha, Rodriguez.
The day saw Welsh Hitter, Luke Rowe, organiser of the recent Hitters GP, get in a break with Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) and then joined by Anthony Roux (FDJ), Francisco Javier Aramendia (Caja Rural) and Lloyd Mondory (AG2R La Mondiale).
The five were able to open up a maximum gap of 6’30â€, but the peloton soon started to increase its pace and close the break down. Once the break had been caught, and the final climb aapproached, many riders tried to attack. Former tour of Britain winner Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) opened up a good gap of 25†but it was too early and that was neutralized with 2 km to go, right before the Valdepenas ‘wall’ where Moreno proved once again his great shape and made the difference with his attack.

“Of course I’m very happy about this win” said Moreno on his teams website. “Today I talked with Purito and we planned this strategy: I had to attack in the same place he did when he won in 2011. I did, and thanks to him and the whole team, I managed to take this incredible result.”
“Joaquim, Valverde and Nibali are still the favorites and the third week will be very tough and probably crucial for general classification. I think I deserved this result after the ‘Tour de France’ where I did a lot of work. We had a training camp at altitude in Andorra and that was hard too but it was worth it.”
“I know it will be hard to keep this jersey: there are still plenty of stages, starting from tomorrow when the climbing will be suited to the likes of Ivan Basso since it’s very long and steady. But anyways, we won’t go crazy about that: if I manage to keep it, it would be great; but things are going great for Katusha. I’m the race leader and Purito has already recovered some of the time lost and quickly moving up the general classification. So we have to continue ike this, and that’s the most important thingâ€.

Overall favourite, and third on the stage, Rodriguez, said afterwards “I’m very happy for Dani. He’s in incredible shape right now. We’re in a perfect condition for the general classification. Today I had to follow Dani when he attacked, but the truth is I couldn’t: in fact, nobody could!â€
Alejandro Valverde who was second said of the finish, “It was a really hard finish. The team worked hard to the penultimate climb to keep all attacks close and Katusha also put some riders at the front to complete the chase. Dani went really strong, I hesitated for a bit, and when I wanted to react, it was impossible to get to his wheel.”
“Dani is, together with Purito, the best rider in such finishes, an amazing rider – hats off to him. They proved to be in really great condition. It seems like the story is up to the two of them and myself in these uphill sprints, but there’s still a long way to go in the race.”
“Even though Dani is also gaining time, we get some seconds day after day and we’re happy with that. The real mountains will start tomorrow – it will be quite a harder stage than the previous ones and we’ll see how we really feel.”

Roche, who is now second overall after fourth on the stage but only a second off the lead, said “It was a nasty uphill finish but I think I did a good job finishing fourth as this climb is for the specialists. Naturally, I’m a little disappointed about losing the jersey with one second but it’s no disaster for us. The race is long and many opportunities ahead of usâ€.

Another overall hopeful Chris Horner (Radioshack Leopard Trek) slipped to fifth place behind the new race leader. “It was a difficult climb but it was very fast so in just a few minutes it was over. You had to be good right from the start, which isn’t my specialty. Everyone got their gas in the first 2-300 meters and then just held it where you were. I need something longer to get up to my top speed. Tomorrow should be better for me.â€
Today is another difficult climbing day before the rest day on Tuesday. There is a cat 1 climb with 15% pitches midway through the 187km stage and then the final climb Güéjar Sierra. Alto de Hazallanas is 18% in two areas for an HC climb at finish. Explosive racing action is a sure bet.
