A rider who was challenging for a GC spot in the Tour de France, Bauke Mollema, held off the sprinters to win stage 17 after the cross winds wreaked havoc

Belkin’s Bauke Mollema won the Vuelta a España’s stage 17 today in Burgos with a successful attack in the final kilometre. Together with his Belkin Pro Cycling Team teammates David Tanner and Robert Wagner, the Dutchman stayed attentive when the pack split in the cross-winds and surprised the small first group with a short but powerful solo surge.

“I knew this was my chance,” Mollema said. “I thought all day about an attack in the last kilometre. I knew the peloton would be small after the climb in the final kilometres. The crosswinds made for an even smaller group, so that was perfect. Under the red flag the speed went down. This was my moment. I gave everything I had and suffered a lot but managed to hold on until the line.”

Mollema welcomed the victory. “I came here with ambitions for a good classification result but after the first week I felt that that was going to be hard after a heavy Tour de France. From that moment on, I focused on a stage win. It’s fantastic that I’ve managed to pull it off.”

Saxo-Tinkoff Use the Cross Winds again
With 30 kilometres to go, the Danish squad did what they have done before when a crosswind section is approaching and increased the pace significantly and the peloton exploded The fierce pace quickly swept up the escapees while the rider in 5th overall, Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R) and overall seventh, Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) were caught behind. Saxo-Tinkoff continued to hold the massive pressure on the first group of about 40 riders.

In Burgos, a short but steep climb was first used as a catapult by Diego Ulissi (Lampre) who leapt away from the favourites but was caught with 6 kilometers to go before Bauke Mollema (Belkin) made his move. The good news for Saxo-Tinkoff was that their rider Nicolas Roche moved up to overall 5th

The rider in second overall, Chris Horner (Radioshack-Leopard-Trek) says “The last kilometres were really complicated. The first two-thirds of the race were incredibly boring and uneventful with no excitement. Then the last one-third was incredibly fun and dangerous. Cancellara was amazing. There were probably seven Saxo riders on the front and Fabian just took me past all of them, then pulled for another 2k or more.”

“For me that was the difference today and I thank him for staying in the race as long as he did after winning the time trial. He was unbelievable in the beginning of the mountain stages and amazing today.” Cancellara finished fifth today and leaves the Vuelta now to return home for his final preparation of the upcoming World championships.

It’s back to the mountains again on Thursday for stage 18. The stage begins in Burgos and ends atop the Peña Cabarga after 186.5km and five climbs, including the uphill finish with a section at 20%. The Peña Cabarga has provided plenty of racing excitement in past races and with only three climbing stages to go and plenty of opportunists still in the hunt for time, should once again figure prominently in la Vuelta. Horner: “Tomorrow could be a very big day. We don’t know how much affect it will have on the race but it will certainly be the stage for all the fans to watch from the couch. Grab your beer and get ready for the show!

Aussie Adam Hansen (Lotto Belisol) attacked with Spaniard Francisco Javier Aramendia. The two escapees had a maximum advantage of eight minutes and after a break of 165 kilometres, Hansen and Aramendia were caught 20km from the finish. Photo: lavuelta.com
