News: Racing returns to Haytor Post Tour of Britain

A week after the Tour of Britain finished on Haytor in Devon, action returns to the slopes of Dartmoor with the annual Mid Devon CC Hill Climbs.

Action starts on the Saturday morning with a shortened version of the climb tackled by the pros, but still long by hill climb standards at 3.1 miles, compared to 3.7 miles tackled in the Tour of Britain. The opening half mile section from Bovey Tracey is missed out, but the hard finish is the same. The course record stands at 12m 44secs by Jeff Williams, dating back to the 1979 National Championships.

In the afternoon action switches to the picturesque climb of Widecombe in the Moor, much shorter at 0.9 miles but with a 20% gradient to test the riders. Course record for that one stands at 4m 10secs, also set in a National Championship by Chris Boardman in 1990.

A good field of 33 riders face the Haytor climb, and 27 at Widecombe, with last year’s top 3 returning: James Dobbin of Arctic-Sram RT (twice National Hill Climb champion in 2006 and 2007), Tavis Walker of VC Walcot and Paul Jones of Bristol South CC. Other riders to watch include Ben Davis of Bristol Road Club and local rider Andrew Feather of Exeter Wheelers.
